webfact Posted December 15, 2011 Share Posted December 15, 2011 Democrat Spokesman Claims Thaksin's Passport Reinstated The opposition Democrat Party asks the foreign minister to explain the alleged reinstatement of a Thai passport for ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra. Democrat spokesperson Chawanont Intharakomalsut said he has received a letter from a civil servant of the Foreign Ministry claiming a group of politicians and some of its staff members managed to remove the name of ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra from its blacklist and have issued him a new Thai passport. Chawanont said the controversial move occurred on October 31 in the ministry's Department of the Consular Affairs which had been closed during the recent flooding in Bangkok. Chawanont noted that Foreign Minister Surapong Towichakchaikul was in Dubai between November 22 and 25 and he believed the minister then met with Thaksin to deliver his new passport. The spokesperson urged Surapong to give an explanation on the matter, present his ministry's blacklist to the public to show whether Thaksin's name has been removed and set up a panel to investigate. Chawanont asked the House committee on foreign affiairs to clarify whether it authorized its chairman Sunai Junlapongsathorn to submit a complaint to the International Court of Justice against former premier Abhisit Vejjajiva, also the current Democrat leader, and his ex-deputy Suthep Thaugsuban over the crackdown on the red-shirt protests last year. If true (and putting aside for a moment all the ridiculousness of an on the run felon being issued a passport) one wonders on what grounds Thaksin was allowed to have someone pick up the passport for him. The rules are very clear with regards this. Passports must be collected by passport holders themselves. Once again, one rule for the rest of you plebs, another rule for us. Chavanond showed the original and provided copies of the letter - signed by a "New Breed of Foreign Ministry Official" - to the media Thursday. The letter claimed that the ministry's computer was unlocked to issue the passport on October 31 - at a time when the immigration offices on Chaeng Wattana Road were closed due to flooding. Well Thaksin is the boss of the government and the purpose of the government is to whitewash Thaksins crimes. They told it from the beginning.... so it is hardly surprising. If he printed one up for Charles Manson or Jack the Ripper, do you figure they'd get into the country- (assuming, of course, Jack the Ripper was still alive in this analogy)? The real news will break if and when he steps off the plane on Thai territory. Everything that happens before that is just posturing and puffing of the chests. Shadowy comings and goings of a Foreign Minister flying overseas to secretly meet with fugitive relatives... The Yingluck government reads like a cheap dime novel. Pheu Thai MP Sunai watered down his 'request' to the ICC into 'dropping by' while in The Hague, like a courtesy visit. This was supposed to be on the 9th this month. Now it's the 15th, no news yet, no photo-op, no nothing. Makes you wonder if the MP was in the Hague, and if he managed to have his (undoubtedly) short visit to the ICC. Just like Thaksin's much vaunted speech in the USA at the conference, that never materialized and was hushed up. Thaksin's PR team is long on blustering and short on results. Chavanond, a former secretary to the foreign minister under the previous government, showed the original and provided copies of the letter signed by a "New Breed of Foreign Ministry Official" to the media yesterday. The letter claimed that a ministry computer was unlocked by an official who wanted to please "big boss", to issue the passport on October 31, at a time when the Consular Affairs Department's office in Chaeng Wattana was closed due to flooding. According to the letter, a passport was issued and the name of the person in the passport was removed from the black list. The chief of the passport division at the Consular Affairs Department is authorised to issue passports to eligible persons who are required to apply in person and pay the fee to the Foreign Ministry. The application form, serial number of the passport and the number on the fee receipt must be matched. Chavanond said that the information was confirmed as he had also learned from his sources at the ministry that a passport had been issued and already delivered to Thaksin. It might have been done during Foreign Minister Surapong Towichuk-chaikul's trip to Dubai from November 22-25, he said. Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva yesterday called on the foreign minister to prove that Thaksin has not been issued a passport and that his name has not been taken off the black list. Foreign Ministry spokesman Thani Thongpakdi said he had not received any information from the department on the issuance of a passport to Thaksin.
