Hi, wondering if anyone is able to help me out.

My girlfriend is currently studying at an international university - currently in 3rd year - and has just been told that she she won't be able to continue studying 4th year as she does not have a grade 12 certificate from high school since she stopped studying the final year (she has a grade 11 certificate). So, she was told today that she has to finish this current 3rd year of uni, drop out and gain her grade 12 certificate before she can study 4th year.

Since I've got little idea about any of this since the education system is completely different from back home in the UK, could anyone offer any suggestions as to any schools/places where a grade 12 certificate can be earned in Bangkok and at what price?

Also, is it possible for this to be completed in a short period of time? Currently she is studying for a grade 12 certificate once a week on Sundays for free (Government funded??) however she would like to speed this process up.

Appreciate any help

Is it possible for her to get a GED (General Equivalency Diploma) or to take HS evening classes in the evening? Maybe a home study for G. 12?

The other option is to talk to the University, which should not have admitted her in the first place, if this was a requirement and see if she can continue her 4th year, but if they will hold off on actually giving her the University degree until she presents them with her G. 12 certificate.

Thanks for the replies.

Talking to the university unfortunately won't work. There was a way around it last year by dropping out(?) of uni and then rejoining - like getting a new student ID etc. I'm not sure how this worked but it did - I went with her last time to do it.

From what my girl told me as well - the system has changed slightly from previous years? Her lecturer(s) gave her the go ahead to study once a Sunday for G12 which would have been fine, although this recent change has meant that it needs to be sorted now rather than during studying 4th year. Whatever the change was, it was significant enough to change her lecturer(s) mind from giving the go-ahead for a once-a-week Sunday study, to a 'no 4th year until G12 is gained'.

My girlfriend would really like to attain her G12 ASAP rather than prolonging her studies for another year (her mind is made up that it has to be quick - I myself have just taken a year out of my university to focus on my future ambitions, different minds!). She told me she has heard of a school that she can get her G12 within 3 months but at a cost of 90k Baht though she doesn't want to foot her family with that sort of bill after them spending a tonne on her university fees.

In regard to your question about a GED or HS evening classes - unfortunately I'm not even sure what they even are. Coming from a country where the education system is different from anyone else's, I'm very ignorant on this subject (though as you can see, I want to know hence this topic!). Ideally she would like to study for her G12 in as short a time as possible but also where it's not going to pillage the family's bank account. As I said, the Sunday class is free but looks like it will take a year to complete. Being that it would mean she would have to stay in Thailand for a whole year and not being able to come visit me (her turn) later next year, I can see why she would like it sorted as quickly as possible (of course, not the sole reason - but i'd like to think so biggrin.png ).

So yeah, I'd love to help her with a few ideas but I'm clueless when it comes to this so this was my first port of call. Minimal amount of time to attain her G12 and not hugely expensive is what we're looking for. My girlfriend and I would really appreciate any suggestions/options you might have. Unfortunately, I'm not able to tell if your idea Scott ("Is it possible for her to get a GED (General Equivalency Diploma) or to take HS evening classes in the evening? Maybe a home study for G. 12?") is possible or not - do you think it would be? I'll pass it on to her anyway.

and maprao - there's a lot of things here that I don't understand and havn't in my last 3 or 4 years of coming to Thailand - I too was surprised.

Again, appreciate any help

edit: sorry. I believe I just posted an essay.

I believe she was given the go ahead previously based on the assumption that she'd complete her grade 12 studies before graduation. Is there any chance of that happening?

Don't think so. Again it could be with this new rule in place or just someone higher/in another place saying no.

Many of my grade ten students are preparing to apply for pre-degree studies. This allows them to start studying now, but they will not be allowed to graduate if they don't finish grade 12.

One of my wife's friends got pregnant when she was in high school and had to drop out. She later finished her G12 certificate using the Saturday program that the OP's girlfriend is using. If I remember correctly, she was able complete one year's worth of classed in about 3 months.

The OP's girlfriend might consider talking to her Sunday class teacher to see if she can add extra hours/do extra work and get her G12 certificate early.

At the international college at Payap University, a student is not allowed to start without a diploma and transcript or equivalent documents. I too wonder how she was ever allowed to enroll. During the admissions process the admissions office should have verified she had the proper credentials prior to accepting the student prior to her starting her first year. The only way I can imagine that she was accepted was conditionally on the basis that she obtain her G12 credentials prior to reaching her 4th year. If this is not the case, then the school either knowingly or mistakenly enrolled her.

Regardless of how she enrolled she still needs to solve her G12 problem. I think the GED would be the best option. Check out this school in Bangkok for the GED. I cut and paste some of the info from the website here.

First off, thank you for the replies.

My girlfriend is actually at university at the moment to try sort things out. Again, it seems like G12 before 4th year is required - though she did just tell me on the phone that she has the option of going to another university to study.. (god i'm confused!).

This is very interesting. I think my girlfriend may have more luck with the Sunday teacher than with her uni. To me, this seems like the ideal option.

Also, thanks for your reply. I'm not sure how many subjects she needs to study, but from those course fees it seems like that route is pretty expensive. At least it is when she is receiving free teaching at the moment, albeit a few hours once a week.

I think a talk to the Sunday teacher is the priority - if it can be done in 3 months like otherstuff1957 said, then to me that seems perfect. If not, an option like above might be the route to go down.. or whatever information my girlfriend comes back from uni with today.

Thanks for your help. I'll keep this updated when I find out :)
