Fire Safety concerns for residents at Jomtien Apartment Complex

PATTAYA: -- A room was destroyed at an apartment complex in Jomtien on Monday. No injuries were reported and the room was unoccupied at the time of the fire on the 12th floor of View Talay 8, located off Jomtien Beach. Fire Fighters made their way to the room but soon encountered a problem as the dry riser inlet valve appeared not to have a water supply, which should be of serious concern to other residents at View Talay 8. Fire fighters were forced to use a domestic water supply from an adjacent room. The room was not connected to an electric supply and was in the process of being decorated.

Oh dear, I wonder how many high rise apartments (not just the View Talays) actually check that their water hydrants etc are in working order?

Something wrong with this report. It states "as the dry riser inlet valve appeared not to have a water supply"

A DRY riser is not supposed to contain water, thats why its called a dry riser. The pipework is to provide a way of getting water to the upper floors and is designed so that the fire service can attatch a pumping appliance to the inlet valve, ie the fire service provides the water.

Of course whether the block should have a sprinkler system is another matter entirely.

My building has sprinklers and I thought that all the VTs do. I have three sprinklers in my unit and as far as I know the water for them comes from the roof tanks.
