BANGKOK, Jan 1 - Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra is by far the most popular national political figure, while her predecessor Abhisit Vejjajiva has been voted the most impressive opposition politician, according to a new poll released on Sunday.

Ms Yingluck is thought of favourably by 77.7 percent of those polled, far ahead of Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung's 13.9 percent showing, according to the ABAC Poll conducted by The Assumption University's Poll Centre between December 20-31, 2011.

The survey conducted among 2,149 people aged above 18 in 17 provinces found Ms Yingluck is the most popular politicians on the ruling camp. Her predecessor Abhisit Vejjajiva also topped the list of popular politicians on the opposition camp with 74.9 percent of those polled voted for him, far ahead of Mr Chuwit Kamolvisit, the outspoken opposition politician, who received 16.7 percent.

About 79 percent of those surveyed rated corruption and collusion to reap benefits into politician and state officials own pockets as the most disgusting behaviour.

Regarding the most desirable traits among politicians and state officials that people wish to see in the New Year 2012, 70.4 percent of those polled agreed that honesty and integrity come first.

Among top five wish list of Thais in 2012, the majority of respondents or 82.9 per cent wished the country to be peaceful and for Thais to always be helpful to each other. Next, 73.5 percent hoped the Yingluck administration would honour election pledges by implementing Bt300 daily minimum wage, providing a start-up salary of Bt15,000 for new graduates and introducing a credit card for farmer.

However, a deepening rift among Thais is the most cause for concern, as stated by 80.7 percent of those polled. Some 71 percent were concerned about rising consumer prices and inflation. 68.3 percent were concerned that natural disasters such as flooding and earthquake might strike. 65.9 and 63.3 percent worried about crimes, drug problem and corruption, respectively. I find this alarming in that other surveys show the majority Thai's think corruption is acceptable (i.e., can live with it) as long as they may benefit from it at some point. Since this article's survey results show the majority of Thai's see corruption as disgusting behavior does this mean the Trickle Down Effect is no longer occurring?

Interesting newsn but only one of them has ever won an election.

I think you missed a class, Parliamentary Procedures 101.

Yes, lets hope she will accept his offer and go head to head on live TV ... She has now refused 7... yes SEVEN times to go head to head with Khun Abhisit .. What is it she is scared of..? Who would make the best Question-master..? Jutaporn...Haha...

Interesting news, but only one of them can speak in clear sentences.

Well you are absolutely right but the other one is pretty darned good looking for a clone.

Who's your favourite politician? That's a bit like asking who's your favourite dentist!

Not if you're a politico! I sure will miss Barney Frank.

The comedy that arrogant ponce spawned will surely be missed.

Why should she go head to head, she is already PM and dosent have to prove anything to him.

You are right.

That being said it would give her a chance to prove she is not a air head.

It would give the people some hope for a decent government. That is if she didn't blow it and say be patient and start crying.

To be fair to Yingluck she showed how smart she was. She knew she could not hope to compete with the experienced and eloquent Abhisit in a political debate so she avoided it. She's not just a pretty face!

Obviously she is not an air head as she won the election by as they say a landslide from the votes of Thai people.

Abhisit was probably lucky he was not PM at the time, when these worst floods in 100 years hit as he could not have done anything more than Yingluck.

I would have to say that most Thai people were also upset and crying over the devistation and deaths that the floods caused, not only Yingluck.

How does winning an election acting as the open puppet of Thaksin prove she isn't an airhead?

She won the election by better campaigning. Nothing wrong with taking advise off big brother who was a PM of nThailand and has the experience.

She won the election by "better" last name.

Which leads to the conclusion that the Thai electorate prefer the Shinawatras to the alternative. Even if (as some assert) she is an airhead, who can't speak coherently, won't engage Abhisit in a TV debate, trawl this forum for all the other claims.....

Doesn't say much about the alternative!

Or prefers to be bought by them. Don't kid yourself. Thailand isn't a democracy. The democratic party here can't even campaign in Isaan without threat or reality of violence. Again, it doesn't mean Yingluck is smart or capable. It's politics, yes.

I would probably agree with you that Thailand is not a properly functioning democracy. I suspect our views would diverge when it comes to listing (by order of importance) the things which are preventing it being a properly functioning democracy.

Perhaps but thanks anyway for sparing us another speech about amart.

Back to the topic. Yingluck isn't anything close to the best Thailand could potentially offer as leaders any more than George W. Bush was for the USA.

If you are suggesting that she had any hand in the campaign decisions being made then you are clearly out of touch of reality with how campaigns are handled here in general or PTP during election in particular.

"About 79 percent of those surveyed rated corruption...... as the most disgusting behaviour..........70.4 percent of those polled agreed that honesty and integrity come first."

And yet she won the election with the slogan "Thaksin thinks, PTP acts." I guess George Burns was right, if you can fake sincerity you've got it made. Though I suppose having a few billion for bribes, and promising even more of the taxpayers money in populist policies, helps.

Dont be fooled Yingluck isnt deciding anything, including whether to debate or not. The smartest thing Thaskin did was not to other cash rewards to vote for PTP upfront but promise payment after they got in. (In 6 months every Thai will be rich)

Yingluck and Abhisit both rate well in latest opinion polling

Abac survey shows corruption and lack of honesty are main grievances

Yingluck Shinawatra and Chalerm Yoobamrung are the most popular government figures, while Abhisit Vejjajiva and Chuwit Kamolvisit are the most popular politicians in the opposition, according to results of a public opinion survey released yesterday.

Assumption University's Abac Poll asked 2,149 residents from 17 provinces in all regions of the country - including Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Chon Buri and Nakhon Si Thammarat - about their favourite politicians on both sides of the aisle in the past year. The respondents were aged 18 and over and the survey was conducted between December 20 and 31.

Prime Minister Yingluck came first among government figures, with a 78 per cent approval from respondents. In distant second place was Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm, who got 14 per cent of votes, according to Noppadon Kannikar, director of Abac Poll.

They were followed by Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Yongyuth Wichaidit, Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong, and Defence Minister Yuthasak Sasiprapha, the poll results said.

Among opposition politicians, opposition leader Abhisit, who is also the Democrat Party leader, got the most votes with 75 per cent. He was followed by Chuwit, an MP from the small Rak Thailand Party, with close to 17 per cent.

Other popular opposition figures included Chuan Leekpai, Rangsima Rodrassami and Suthep Thaugsuban, all of them from the Democrats.

Asked to identify the behaviour of the politicians and bureaucrats they disliked most in the past year, 79 per cent of respondents cited corruption. More than 55 per cent of those surveyed pointed to bad manners, 55 per cent to favouritism, 52 per cent to failure to tackle red tape, and 52 per cent to abuse of power.

Asked what they wanted to see most in politicians this year, 70 per cent said honesty. Almost 66 per cent pointed to diligence, 64 per cent to sincere service, and 61 per cent to appointment based on merit.

Close to 54 per cent of those surveyed were hopeful a positive outlook was ahead for them, while 46 per cent were worried the future would not be bright.

More than three quarters of respondents (79 per cent) were unsure that most politicians and bureaucrats these days are honest. A total of 56 per cent of those surveyed were unsure that constitutional amendment would solve the political conflict.

Almost half of those surveyed (48.7 per cent) said they believed the political rift would become more violent this year, 34 per cent said the conflict would remain unchanged, and 17 per cent said it would get better.

In a separate development, the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has issued an order empowering the agency to take action against senior bureaucrats below the rank of division director.

The order was announced by NACC chairman Parnthep Klanarongran on December 20 and took effect Saturday.

It will give the anti-graft agency expanded powers to deal with bureaucrats suspected of involvement in irregularities or gaining wealth dishonestly. In the past the NACC could only take action against senior bureaucrats with the position of division director or higher.

The NACC will this year focus on promoting honesty while expanding its network of people engaged in anti-corruption activities, Parnthep said. The agency would also boost its investigative activities and moves to protect witnesses in corruption cases, he said.
