Thailand, Russia to cut deal on visa exemption: Kantathi

BANGKOK: -- Thailand and Russia will enjoy visa exemption soon as part of bilateral efforts to promote tourisms, trades and communication, Thai Foreign Minister Kantathi Suphamongkhol said Monday.

As of now Thais going to Russia need to apply for a visa while Russians can apply for visa on arrival. Moscow allows visa exemption only for diplomatic passports.

About 120,000 Russians visited Thailand each year, while only about 2,000 Thais came to the country.

"We are in the final process on the initiative for both people to travel to each country without a visa. This will surely promote tourism, as well as communication of people," the minister.

He was speaking on his first day official visit to Moscow during which he raised the topic with Yevgeny Primakov, Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation.

Kantathi said he and Primakov agreed to the idea and will let authorities concerned to finalise it.

"Both of us hope that our leaders will be able to sign the agreement on the visa free facilitation next month during Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur in which Russian leader Vladimir Putin will also attend," the minister said.
