I started to learn to play the Violin when I was 11 years old. My Mum made me do it.

I studied it for a year, it was hard but I was getting somewhere, studying 2 hours a week but I gave it up as my peers called me a poof and at 12, you dont like being called a poof even if you dont know what it means!!

I WISH I had kept it up though, and I regret that I did not.

Go for it Bambi, I hear Vanessa Mae makes a lot of money playing the fiddle, but leaving the money aspect out of it, its great to be able to play a musical instrument.

My youngest Son plays guitar, he is always a HIT when he comes to LOS and plays some Jack Johnson at 2am on a beach somewhere!

Good Luck

Yep, I'm the same as Pauly.

Took violin lessons for three years until someone called me a chutney.

I was already quite good on the piano when I started but I found the violin much harder .

I too used to play the violin when I was a wee lass. However I was quickly put off continuing when my Mum started telling me to go and practive the "vile din" not good for my confidence at all :o

Bambi, I would say learn guitar, its loads better and never fails to impress people when you pick up a guitar and can actually play a decent tune!

I agree... learn the guitar instead.

It's a much more social musical instrument in a group scene, and you can amuse yourself with your guitar for hours when alone as well.

A beginner violinist always sounds so terrible... a bit like a cat having its nails sawn off... not at all easy on the ears... :o

I agree that guitar would be better than violin....unless you have a strong passion for violin music...in which case go for the violin and realize that it will be awhile before you will make sweet music.

Also, for beginners who know nothing about how music works then many times a piano is best since it makes understanding the notes and chords easier for many people. Of course pianos are expensive and not portable but you can buy cheap electric keyboards for around 2000 baht which would be good for beginners....a Thai person might be able to find one used for even less. If you buy an old used one be sure that it can play several notes at one time....many of the really old ones would only allow one note at a time to be played and this is probably not what you should get.

Very good point chownah... the piano is probably the best musical instrument to enable someone to learn the "syntax" of music... the differences between minor and major scales... what a tone and a semitone are... etc... and not what just sounds right to the ear.

I'd go for the guitar, you can practise the Violin for an absolute age and it can still sound like drowning cats in a sack, but 2 hours on the Guitar will have you strumming an A chord, a C Chord and an E chord, voila...Music

I would also suggest learning either piano/keyboard or guitar.

Both can play multiple notes straight away; easy to play songs you know that sort of thing. You can play alone and there are countless compositions for both in all hte styles. Violin only really sounds great IMHO playing classical, and played well it is amazing; however it sucks for jazz or modern music; the sound doesn't fit. And yes Stephan Grapelli is musically onto it, but it just sounds wrong.

The violin is a VERY challenging instrument; it takes at least a couple of years to get past the sounding like killing a cat sound. It also is kind of sore to play in the neck. As a left hander I was told to give up as I could never be good unless I played it back to front (in which case I could never play in an orchestra), so I didn't play it for long (I did however also play the piano for quite a bit longer) - something to think about if you are left handed.

Learning the piano or guitar, you learn how chords work so you can be able to write and make stuff up yourself; single note instruments are harder to understand those concepts on.

I would go for guitar or an electronic keyboard.

More fun!

Bela Fleck fan? I heard on CCTV that he was in Beijing playing a concert as a guest star to an American flok music singer. Talk about a small world getting smaller.

I agree that the violin is a wonderful instrument, however, it does take years to get a half good sound, and if not played very well it sounds the pits! If you really love it and want to play, it stick with it for the long term and you will be rewarded.

However, something like a guitar gives you the most flexibility, and you can play a tune or two after a few simple lessons. I was playing 'Mull of Kintyre' after just one lesson - I know 'Mull of Kintyre' is a dirge but it gave me great confidence and the motivation to keep going.

Whatever you do enjoy it!

as a drummer, i vote drums because a) you can pound out your agression on something other than the wife/dog, :o it's relatively easy to learn a basic beat (easier that learning to get the basic major and minor chords on guitar sounding clean anyhow), c) you can jam along with most songs once you get the basics down, d) every one plays guitar, very few people play drums so they are often in demand.

but one cautionary note, drummers are prone to spontaineous human combustion.

If you buy a good violin and then find that you can't play it, you can always sell the violin case to the mafia. They use them to carry their machine guns.  :D

that is my plan ... worry i will give up sometime :D sicily is my next destination :o

Every instrument has it's trails but the violin is a classic, also quite versatile. Good luck with it Bambi. :D

thx TBB to encourage me

BB,

When I was young my next door neighbour was learning the violin. Every time that he played it, his dog sat outside his window and howled and howled as though he was in great pain.

In your line of work you could chase off all of your customers...

(and then you would have twice as much time to spend posting on the forum... :o )
