Hi, I'm a UK citizen who has just arrived and has the standard 30 day visa. However I plan to spend 3 weeks in THailand before flying to Burma and returning two weeks later. Will I need to apply for a visa extension in Thailand or will i be able to get another 30 day visa when landing back in Bangkok again with no extra difficulties?

Many thanks

I assume you mean 30 day exemption, not visa, as you are a UK citizen.

On your return from Myanmar, you will be granted another 30 days, no problem.

Under current rules, you could do that indefinitely, and continue to get 30 day stamps at the airport many times as you like. 30 days for air arrivals, 15 days for land arrivals.

I thought the current rules were that you could only stay on tourist visas for 180 days, so that should probably read "under current enforcement of the rules".

No. That 180 day counting thingie was abolished years ago! Not a rule so enforcement of a rule that doesn't exist is irrelevant.

When they started the current system of 30 day visa exempt by air and 15 days by land the 180 day rule was not kept as this was eastablished to crack down on those folks who where working and living in Thailand on 30 day border runs. The wailing and rending of cloth could be heard across the land when the 180 day rule was established. Thailand was faced with doom as the economy was kept affloat by these scofflaws.

Whatever ... the rule was abolished and if I had to guess why, I would say because it was too much of a headache for immigration officers.
