MONTERREY, MEXICO (BNO NEWS) -- Six people were killed on Wednesday afternoon when a fire broke out at a furniture warehouse in northern Mexico, police said on late Thursday.

The fire broke out on the fourth floor of a warehouse owned by the Famsa furniture store near Afonso Reyes avenue in Monterrey, the capital of the state of Nuevo Leon. The warehouse employs a total of more than 400 people.

Nuevo Leon's Civil Protection director Jorge Camacho Rincon said four people, including two men and two women, were killed during the fire. Two of the victims died after inhaling large amounts of smoke while the two others burned to death as they tried to seek cover in the floor's bathroom.

Emergency teams made up of the Red Cross, local police, firefighters, personnel from the Civil Protection and the Forensic Medical Service had rushed to the scene. Neighboring buildings were also evacuated to prevent further casualties.

An investigation into the cause of the fire was still ongoing on Thursday, but Nuevo Leon Fire Department commander Andres Molina Irigoyen said a spark from a welding machine on the third floor is believed to have caused the blaze. The fire caused serious damage to the warehouse and the furniture inside.

The complex is located in a concentrated area of Monterrey near the city's bus station and near a train station. It is also only a few meters (feet) away from the Casino Royale, where a violent incident caused the deaths of at least 52 people in August.

A group of men carrying assault rifles and containers full of gas arrived at Monterrey's Casino Royale on August 25, 2011. The gunmen warned customers to exit the building before they set the casino on fire, but many people were unable to escape. In addition to the 52 deaths, at least 10 others were injured in the attack.

Monterrey and the state of Nuevo Leon have been engulfed in increasing violence as the Los Zetas and Gulf cartels battle for control of drug trafficking routes to the United States, but the casino attack was one of the worst in years.
