US Navy arrives in Pattaya for some R&R

PATTAYA:-- A welcomed boost to the local economy in the form of thousands of US Navy personnel have arrived in Pattaya. The USS Abraham Lincoln CVN 72 has docked at the Laem Chabang Port for 5 days, allowing its 5,500-strong crew a chance to sample the delights of Thailand. Many of the sailors and officers will undoubtedly make their way to Pattaya and on Friday Night, Walking Street in South Pattaya was awash with the US Navy who were enjoying the sights and sounds of the city. We wish them the best during their stay in Pattaya

Was involved with their Shore Patrols (now called Shore Liaison Group) last night and while there were a few incidents involving an individual sailor/marine or two having had a bit too much to drink, these visits are generally problem free and do give a boost to the otherwise slow hotel and bar season. Didn't see any signs of price increases but then we weren't allowed to drink !!

In the good old days, when the US boats anchored off Pattaya, the town population more or less tripled overnight and it came alive with banners welcoming the US Navy and bus-loads of ladies (and others) arriving from Isaan for the duration. These days I doubt that 5500 sailors even makes a dent in the Russian population.

Don't worry,I know of shops and bars which have those welcome banners up for the past 17 years.
