Vegemite = Ga Biek ?

Featured Replies

I had the unfortunate experience of trying vegemite once and saw similarities in taste to a thai cooking ingredient called Ga Biek, which is a type of dark brown shrimp paste.

Anyone else know what Ga Biek is and do you think it is similar to the carnage that vegemite inflicts on your taste buds?

Ask your thai gf/bf she'll know what it is.

It's called 'kapi'. (กะปิ) Indeed a nasty, smelly paste, but made from fermented shrimp, so not similar to Vegemite even though that too is a nasty, smelly paste. wink.png

Vegemite, that delicious and nutritious treat, is made from used brewing yeast extract.

KRS1,

Vegemite inflicting carnage on your taste buds ?

Heathen !

BTW, ownership of that wonderful Australian product has been usurped by a giant American Food Corporation. At least they knew what was good !

Cheers.

Ahh yes, made from shrimp ... but the treachery is very similar !

To call it a paste is well off the mark.It is somewhat similar to Marmite.Vegemite, to celebrate Australia Day, January 26, is to change the iconic label to have the word AUSTRALIA in prominent type. The last time they tried to change the label they had to call out the riot police. I trust its only temporary we love our Vegemite just the way it is.

Indeed. There was the Cheesymite version for a wile. Don't know if that lasted. Didn't like it much myself.

a nasty, smelly paste,

One of your best posts ever. thumbsup.gif

Vegemite, from the antipodeans, is a very poor substitute for Marmite.I am sure there is nothing like in Thailand! If you can find something nearly similar please post it on this forum.

"Ga biek" is a close approximation of the sound the typical homo sapien makes upon first tasting vegemite.

Vegemite for ever

I heard it put's lead in your pencil.

But I can not vouch for thatsmile.png

..tastes great smeared on hot corn...or vegemite and lettuce sandwiches.

Cherry Blossom or Kiwi shoe polishes are quite similar. wink.png
