Pattaya Bungee company “safe” following “viral” video of Zambian jump accident

PATTAYA:-- A Pattaya Bungee Jump company is reassuring customers that their attraction is safe following a video which has appeared on the internet recently involving an Australian woman who jumped in Zambia. The video showed her jumping off the Victoria Falls Bridge over the Zambesi River and the cord attached to her legs snapped, causing her to fall over 100 meters into the crocodile-infested waters below. Although she escaped death she was injured and retold her story to an Australian news crew. On Monday we visited the Pattaya Bungy Jump Company in Jomtien who explained how they carefully select the elastic cord depending on the jumpers weight and only reuse cord for a certain number of jumps before replacing it. Although there are the obvious dangers of jumping off a platform with cord attached to your feet, Pattaya Bungee Jump Company assures its customers that all possible safety precautions are taken before you are allowed to jump.

There is a similar YouTube video of an English bloke to which this same thing happened in Phuket a couple years ago. He was totally F'ed-up afterwards but somehow managed to survive.

One would have to be daft to ever take this "thrill" ride anywhere in the world!

The incident occured in Zimbabwe (Zimbabwe side of the vic falls), not Zambia, and the lady concerned fell 20-25m, not 100m.

I listened to a first hand account this morning in radio interview from the lady concerned and no mention of crocodiles......

The croc thing just added spice to the story. The river was so fast flowing, what would any self respecting croc do in that particular section of the river?.

Getting back to the cord break, if you look closely the cord separated at the join with the upper non elasticated part of the rope. Not that that made any difference, the (un)lucky girl was still dumped in the river. The book contracts should now come flooding in.

Quite right about the crocs. Been to the falls ( it is called " mosi u tunya " in the Zambian dialect which translates to " the smoke that thunders " ) many times in my youth and have gone to bottom of them which is called the boiling pot which is more or less where the bridge is thus the bungy jumping and there will never ever be crocs in that area.

It should also be noted that the rope snapped after she was already hanging at the end of it, about 20 m above the water. If it had snapped at full speed she could never have survived.

She was so badly injured that she decided to continue her travels after a short time in hospital with bruises.

It was also noted that no one was anywhere near the river's edge ready to save her from drowning - just a bunch of idiots on the bridge shouting obscenities.

It never fails to amaze me how many people will bungy jump in backward countries with few safety regulations - Thailand included.
