Leaveing Thailand On Us Passport And Returning On Thai Passport

Featured Replies

I had to leave Thailand in an emergency with only one of my Thai-US daughters passports. We had to leave on her US passport not her Thai passport. So now upon returning she is under a visa condition not as before just a 10 year old Thai citizen. The immigration officer told me that you do not have to worrier she can over stay with no black list up in till she becomes an adult. I tried solve this problem by taking her with me by foot to Cambodia, Poipet and back to Thailand. The officer told me that you can leave on a US passport and return on a Thai passport only at the Suvarnabhumi airport. Is this true.

You want to ask this question on the "Thai visas and work permits" forum, not here in the General Topics. There are experts over there who have heard this problem many times.

Indeed; moved.

Normally that, or another airport, is where it is done as at land crossings they check for an exit stamp in the arrival passport, and the other country wants to see stamps also. By air this is not a factor and they have experience with such entry so even if first officer does not know what to do a supervisor will. Thereafter always use passport of country concerned for exit/entry.

My wife left Thailand on her American Passport so her depature care would be removed from the system. On return to Thailand she tryed to use her Thai Passport and she was denied entery. Reason was she did not use her Thai passport on departure from BKK. She was only given a 30 day tourist visa on her American Pasport.. I am here on a retirement visa and my wife was here on a Non O Visa. She did not have a reentry permit because post on Thaivisa.com have always said no problem coming back inti country on a Thai Passport. This has caused us all kinds of problems and expence $$$ and time to get things straight with Immigration. I am trying to say is do not go by post on thaivisa check with Thai Immigration on procedures on using two different passports some ones post may just get you problems you never thought you might of had. I realise others have done what my wife tryed to do but it only works some of the time. Be sure you have a reentry permit as a back up if things go wrong as they have for my wife.

Did she depart and re-enter via land or air?

As we have always said the person may have to insist and get supervisor involved but Thai authorities can not prevent entry on Thai passport.

Some members on Thaivisa try to tell you what they actually know on a subject others tell you what they have been told by a friend of a friend and that information is usually not reliable. Looking forward to your remarks on this subject.

Your wife should have asked to speak to a senior Officer - a Thai citizen simply can NOT be denied entry to Thailand when using a Thai Passport, even an expired Passport.

Unless you wife was born in Thailand with dual Thai and American citizenship, she would have had to have left Thailand at some point on her Thai passport.

She may have for instance then gone to the US, become a US citizen, and then come back to Thailand on her US passport.

That doesn't change the fact that she indeed left Thailand on her Thai passport at some point - so you should have argued that point with immigration at the airport. If you have the old Thai passport that she last left Thailand on (with the departures stamp) take that with you next time you travel, along side the new Thai passport.

As others have said, take it to a senior officer. A Thai citizen should never be barred from entering their own country.
