Hizballah planned Mumbai-style attack on Habad Bangkok, Khao San restaurants

DEBKAfile Special Report January 16, 2012, 1:22 PM (GMT+02:00)

Atris_Hussein13.1.12_1.jpg

Hizballah suspect Atris Hussein

The Thai police's capture of a Lebanese-Swedish Hizballah suspect, who was charged Monday, Jan. 16, thwarted a terrorist attack on Bet Habad in Bangkok, involving the taking of hostages and blowing up the building. It was to have followed the same lines as al Qaeda's 2008 assault on the Mumbai Habad center which killed 8 Israelis and Jews - only more ambitious.

The Habad Bangkok is much larger: its hostel has rooms for dozens of lodgers. A second team was to have hit the Khao San Road restaurants popular with Israelis and Americans in a coordinated operation.

This is the first time Western and Israeli agencies have found evidence of the Lebanese Shiite Hizballah using and training operatives in the same terrorist methods as al Qaeda.

debkafile's counter-terror sources note that two or possibly three Hizballah cells were to have gone into coordinated action on the same date this month. The only suspect in Thai custody is Atris Hussein, 47, who was arrested as soon as he landed at Bangkok international airport Thursday, Jan. 12.

He first denied association with Hizballah, claiming he was on holiday. Sunday, he broke down under interrogation and admitted he was on a mission to attack Jewish, Israeli and American sites and that explosive materials had been prepared in advance by another Hizballah team, which had pinpointed the targets and was to have briefed the perpetrators.

Thai authorities believe that each team was made up of two or three members, all carrying European or Persian Gulf emirate passports.

Monday, Jan 16, Hussein led the police to an address he received from his Hizballah controllers in Lebanon in the Samut Sakorn province on Bangkok’s outskirts. There they found a cache of 4,000 kilograms of urea fertilizer and 10 gallons of ammonium nitrate, a chemical compound used in explosives. The materials had not been assembled, indicating the plot was still not quite ready to go.

The Thai police were waiting for the suspect at the airport after receiving alerts from US and Israeli counter-terrorist agencies, which had advance information about the coming attack. According to debkafile's intelligence sources, the tip-off originated with Lebanese nationals living in Bangkok who had been approached for assistance. Those informants, who did not trust the local authorities to act, went straight to Western and Israeli contacts, who then published terror alerts to US and Israeli travelers.

The terror alerts issued by the US embassy and Israel's Counter-Terror Bureau are still in force.

Sources familiar with the investigation report a major manhunt in progress for Hossein's confederates in Thailand, Europe and the Middle East. Some of those sources suspect the advance team members who prepared the explosives materials managed to escape, either by plane from Bangkok or by crossing into Laos and catching a flight there, although others believe they are still hiding out in Thailand waiting for another chance to strike.

Not exactly what I would call a very credible news source. Said website got a long history of presenting half cooked conspiracy thetories, so called "inside" reports etc.

Doesn't mean everything they post is wrong, just need to take with a grain of salt and wait for other confirmation.

Also, this is not just an "Israeli oriented' website, but a gung-ho right-wing view Israeli website.

KS Road isn't just popular with Israelis and Americans. It attracts young kids from all over the world. Somehow, I don't see how targeting young adults who are most likely to hold sympathetic views on the issues that Hezbollah supports, would help Hezbollah.

Although, the Israeli perspective is to emphasize their exposure, the past history is that Hezbollah has murdered more US and French nationals than Israelis. Hezbollah has also kidnapped more non Israeli than Israeli nationals. The successful airline hijackings were against Kuwaiti and TWA airliners.

The Israelis tend to congregate around several places (guesthouses, travel agencies, Chabad house) - not very hard to spot, pretty easy to target.

Yes traveling young Israelis are famously cliquish.

The Channel 3 news just now 10:45 pm has their long, lead news story on the bomb making materials discovery...and video of the suspect in the ski-type mask leading the police into the storage area, and showing all the urea containers and fan boxes instead... along with more Thai police and police cars than I can ever recall seeing in one place at one time -- apart from the Red Shirt riots times.

They also showed the suspect being led into some kind of government facility, with a large large crowd of photographers and video cameramen crowding around. So definitely a lot of interest by the local folks in this now...apart from the broader international media.

I guess 4 tons of bomb making materials is finally enough to start getting people's attention.

As I said in my original post, the type of plot they're reporting on isn't attributed to any sources, nor has that version been reported in the mainstream Western media...

However, the version of events they present does happen to contain a lot of different factual elements that are part of the things we know have occurred here...

More or less credible than the Thai government's changing every 5 minutes version of the plot, driven by the overarching priority to do and say nothing that would hurt their precious tourism industry??? Hmmmm....

It seems the US & Israel didn't tell the Thais until the last moment.

Fearful the Thai Police would tip off the suspects?

Yes but just as notable and important to make mention of and praise is the involvement and obvious persistence of those Lebanese of conscience who got involved and made a positive difference for a change, shame they can't be mentioned and honored publicly for fear of their own lives as they richly deserve it clap2.gifclap2.gif ....

As I'm sitting here one thing bothers me though.. When does the Thai police EVER not parade their suspects with pride and openly without any sort of anonymity? In this case he's got a ski mask on? Maybe he's a plant for the pictures and they've actually prematurely released the real suspect as they originally reported? Doh!!! He really was the suspect and now the true stories surface from the real sources outside the country...

Not a question of more or less credible than Thai authorities. Quite possible for a few versions from few sources to be inaccurate, wrong or fictitious. One being off, does not make the other right.

There were instances in which their reports turned out to be true, though, so can't automaticaly disregard them, just be aware of their track record.

when geo political power brokers intermingle, things get even more confused.

geo-political movements need to be watched with the eyes of a hawk. Various agencies work with two and more kinds of setting where one group doesn't know what the other is doing. I strongly hope that the ones who are honest and clear in mind will shed some light into it.

I'm afraid and after all this some serious things could happen. To many sleeping dogs awoken. Maybe the only purpose of all this hype.

Think about. TH is importing this kind of fertilizer from Russia. Wouldn't it be much easier to ship from Russia into all the destination? Yes, unless it's a setup from a different geo-political power broker for other purposes.

Again, follow the money trail. Ask Sweden and all other countries involved to assist. This is a sure way to trace back to the origins.

Thanks for posting this very insightful article. It sure clarifies and points out the mendacity of the Thais. All along, the targets were well within the Bangkok metropolis, eg. the Bet Habad center and "popular" restaurants frequented by Israeli and American and other foreign tourist along Kao San Road. So all the denials by the Thais about attacks "being planned" but not targeted for Thailand, and the reports that the Thais "have nothing to charge Artis with, and all the Thais being up in arms and being disappointed that the US announced the alert" - without "consulting" the Thais are all coverups to shill for their bustling sex trade tourism.

Note in the Israeli news article that "local Bangkok informants in the Lebanese Bangkok community did not "trust" the local Thai authorities and went instead directly to Israeli and US authorities seeking help. The new media should examine its own professionalism and standards for reporting. It consistently repeated Thai mendacious and misleading statements to try to deflect the effect of a terrorism alert on its sex trade tourism business. Shame on Thailand and its news media for trying to fool people. We've come to expect mendacious behaviour from Thais, but the news media "collaborating" with its 'officials" to spread incorrect reports at the expense of the security and safety of its citizens and foreign residents and travelers is deplorable.

A bit more color and detail from the New York Times... Note the kitty litter angle:

On Monday Thai officials said they believed Thailand was not a target. The chief of the metropolitan police, Winai Thongsong, said in an interview that the suspects had contacted a shipping company in Thailand to send the materials out of the country in containers.

“At first, we were not sure whether Thailand was a target or not,” Mr. Winai said. “But now it is quite clear that our country was being used as a transit area.” The building where the materials were found is a three-story “shop-house” in Samut Sakhon Province, near Bangkok.

Investigators found urea fertilizer packed in bags labeled cat litter and plastic drums of ammonium nitrate, two materials that can be used to make explosives. The Lebanese suspect, whom Thai officials identified as Atris Hussein, accompanied police officers wearing a protective vest and face mask.

http://www.nytimes.c...g-material.html

So the "terror" plot is to ship some urea fertilizer labeled as cat litter out of Thailand.

Probably trying to save some export/import taxes somehow this way or just got some PP/PE bags with that cat litter print for cheap.

Urea is in the first line just a totally common organic fertilizer and not a bomb yet. same goes for liquid ammonium nitrate. These things don't explode.

Where is the imminent terror threat?

Applying logic to the actions of brain-washed idiots is a waste of time. Believe it when they say they intended to attack KS Rd to kill Jews and Americans - the fact that there are very few there compared to other nationalities is immaterial as they all non-believers or martyrs for the cause.

One of the Bali bombers clearly stated that their intent was to kill Americans. The fact that they had a <3.5% success rate was immaterial; when that fact was put to him he just shrugged.

At least those now claiming Hezbollah is not a terrorist organization can go back to cloud-cuckoo land

<deleted>? After working for 8 years on an ammonia and ammonium nitrate plant, I can assure you that the open cut mines which were our biggest customer were not fertilizing their lawns.

When mixed with hydrocarbons (diesel fuel is very good) they make an excellent explosive. The only difference in AN explosive and fertilizer is that the prills (balls) of the explosive are in a much closer tolerance of size to make the explosion more even. When you are going for overkill, it makes SFA difference. I have removed a huge stump using sweepings from the factory floor.

AN will also explode under sufficient heat and pressure, as happened with a truck in oz that had a bearing fire on a rear wheel. The weight of the stacked bags and the heat of the fire were sufficient - the engine block was found a km away.

Don't worry. Thailand doesn't want to bully you somehow just because you are Lebanese or Muslim. And you have a brother almost everywhere in Thailand.

Liquid ammonium nitrate is a controlled substance here in Thailand. They weren't trying to make cat litter, that's for sure. Nor export it. As you've been show before, here's a pic of a building taken down with exactly the same thing, about about the same amount:

How you make that 4000 kg of Urea gonna bang without nitration? And where you gonna nitrate that 4000kg? And how much time you need for it to keep the schedule up with the imminent terror attack?

And why it is packed in cat litter bags and what you want to ship with that cargo company you contacted when you bring all the fertilizer to the KSR?

Right.

So in order to kill a clique of Israeli kids, one detonates 4000 kg of explosive material, thereby bringing down a block or two of the city and most likely killing and maiming a few hundred non Israeli members of the clique. Based upon past truck bombing targets such as the US marine barracks in Beirut, or the US UN peacekeeping contingent or the French paratrooper base, I would expect the bombers to go big. Sorry, but a handful of Israelis or even Chabad House alone is not much of a target, not for a chap with 400kgs of explosive material.

10 gallon of liquid ammonium nitrate, in solution of unknown concentration. Its fertilizer. It isnt a bomb yet and far away to bring a level of destruction as in the Oklahoma bomb attack as you want it probably suggest with that photo.

What makes you think it is the same amount?

Reading and comprehension is not your strong suit? The original post refers to urea-based fertilizer, not pure urea.

"when nitrogen is added to urea, the compound becomes water soluble, making it a highly desired ingredient for lawn fertilizer."

http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-urea.htm

Liquid AN will explode just as easily as prills, normally mixed in a slurry with diesel. It seems the smaller amount of AN was to be used as a trigger for the urea fertilizer. With 4000kg you could make a number of devastating bombs to be used in simultaneous attacks - SOP for muslim terrorists.

4000 kg of Urea is about explosive as 4000 liter luke warm water.

If you drive in an Israeli tank trough Beirut, Lebanon you face a high risk of an Hezbollah attack, but not if you buy a bagel in a backpacker bakery in Bangkok.

Even in a Synagogue in Beirut you would be safe.

Hussain Rahal, a spokesman for Hezbollah, said his group -- which refuses to recognize Israel's right to exist, and which the West considers a terrorist organization -- also supports the restoration of Maghen Abraham.

``We respect the Jewish religion just like we do Christianity,'' he said. ``The Jews have always lived among us. We have an issue with Israel's occupation of land.''

Now you're starting to ask some very good questions. Ones that seem to be hard to find with all the crazy stuff being reported now.

P.S. In one of the above posts, it says they found plastic drums of nitrate. Didn't say how big, but if they are like oil drums, that should be enough.

read here from your smart guy side

http://www.wisegeek.com/what-are-the-different-types-of-urea-fertilizers.htm

What Are the Different Types of Urea Fertilizers?

there are pure Urea fertilizer and urea fertilizer in a mixture with other things plants might like like like phosphate. Its still just a mixture of different chemical componants and the added phosphate make it explosive like laundry detergent powder or cat litter.

Urea nitrate is a totally different chemical compound than just Urea. You add Nitrogen in a chemical process that is called nitration.

Tell me how you want to do it. How you want turn 4000 kg Urea based fertilizer into a 4 ton Urea (ammonium) nitrate? You are on tight schedule.

How you wanna do it logistical and technical? Where you get that nitrogen from? Do you might need other chemicals ?

And don't forget the Urea fertilizer is already packed to be shipped with a cargo company to a destination oversee.

Face it - there is no mega bomb. "4000 kg bomb ingredients "just a better head line then 4000 kg fertilizers in 25 liter PP/PE bags labeled as cat litter.

Sorry, but a handful of Israelis or even Chabad House alone is not much of a target, not for a chap with 400kgs of explosive material.

Get real.

Are you serious?

Why don't you get real instead of posting of Hezbollah propoganda.

True or False?

Dec. 31, 1986: Under the alias Organization of the Oppressed on Earth, Hezbollah announces it had kidnapped and murdered three Lebanese Jews. The organization previously had previously taken credit for the murder of 4 other Lebanese nationals of the Jewish faith.

You want reality? Here's what your harmless friends in Hezbollah did;

On Monday morning, May 7, 1984, the United States embassy in Athens received a video posted in the city… It showed William Buckley undergoing torture… The camera zoomed in and out of Buckley’s nude and damaged body. He held before his genitalia a document marked “MOST SECRET”… Casey later remembered how “… They had done more than ruin his body. His eyes made it clear his mind had been played with. It was horrific, medieval and barbarous”… Buckley showed symptoms of being drugged; his eyes were dull and his lips slack. His gaze was of a person deprived of daylight for some time… Buckley had spent long periods being hooded. Buckley bore chafe marks on his wrists and neck suggesting he had been tethered with a rope or chain. A careful study of every inch of visible skin revealed puncture marks indicating he had been injected at various points.

The second video arrived 23 days later. This time it was posted to the United States Embassy on Via Veneto in Rome It revealed Buckley continued to be horrifically treated… Buckley’s voice was slurred and his manner noticeably more egocentric as if not only the world beyond the camera, but his immediate surroundings, held increasingly less interest for him… His hands shook and his legs beat a tattoo on the floor as he mumbled pathetic pleas to be exchanged under a guarantee the United States would remove “all of its influences” from Lebanon and would persuade Israel to do the same…

On Friday, October 26, 1984, 224 days since Buckley was kidnapped, a third video arrived at the CIA. The tape was even more harrowing. Buckley was close to a gibbering wretch. His words were often incoherent; he slobbered and drooled and, most unnerving of all, he would suddenly scream in terror, his eyes rolling helplessly and his body shaking. From time to time he held up documents, which had been in his burn-bag, to the camera. Then he delivered a pathetic defence of his captor’s right to self-determination in Lebanon… William Buckley’s kidnapping was into its second year by the spring of 1985. The CIA consensus was that he would be blindfolded and chained at the ankles and wrists and kept in a cell little bigger than a coffin.

In 1988, a few years after Buckley’s torture and murder, Hezbollah kidnapped U.S. Marine Colonel Rich Higgins. Higgins, who at the time was serving as a UN military observer, was tortured and eventually murdered. We know as much because two years later Hezbollah released a videotape of his torture-scarred body hung and dangling from the ceiling. Here’s how U.S. diplomat Fred Hof described the blood debt to be paid by Hezbollah’s current leadership, including Nasrallah, for Higgins:

A friend of mine – Colonel Rich Higgins – was kidnapped by Hezbollah while he was serving as a UN military observer in Lebanon… he had been tortured and killed months before our efforts to free him finally ended. I am one of a small handful of Americans who knows the exact manner of Rich’s death. If I were to describe it to you now – which I will not – I can guarantee that a significant number of people in this room would become physically ill. When my former business partner Rich Armitage described Hezbollah a few years ago as the “A-Team” of international terrorism and suggested that there was a “blood debt” to be paid, he was referring to a leadership cadre that is steeped in blood and brutality.

So you take your reality and tell that to the families of the hundreds of US and French nationals murdered by Hezbollah.

The reports say the the Ammonium nitrate comes in solution, its liquid. So you don't have to be worried about the prills.

Now you're starting to ask some very good questions. Ones that seem to be hard to find with all the crazy stuff being reported now.

P.S. In one of the above posts, it says they found plastic drums of nitrate. Didn't say how big, but if they are like oil drums, that should be enough.

The amount of ammonium nitrate solution probably in a 200 liter Plastic drum or two.

Its a liquid but might be hard to mix with fuel oil to create some powerful explosive because ANsol is AN solved in water.

That and Urea fertilizer and many other chemicals you can buy in Thailand from some manufacturers or trading companies. and also come up with some own design of what should be printed on some woven plastic bags or you make a deal with a brother who trades empty cat litter bags for cheap. It will not raise much suspicion if you want your 4000 kg order of urea filled inside that.
