Just a quick ask. How much to send a standard letter or birthday card from Thailand to UK via airmail?

Also, what is Thai transliteration for 'air mail'?

Thanks,

Simon

Last one I sent cost about 13 baht.

Air mail, prai sa nee aa gaat,

ไปรษณีย์อากาศ, or copy and paste the Thai writing and send to whoever so there is no misunderstanding.

I have gathered the distinctive impression that the Thai version of airmail is to convey it by balloon; that, or an army of natives carrying the letters in forked sticks are employed. I do not understand why it takes a fortnight or longer to get a letter to London. Fifty or so years ago mail travelled to and from London and Singapore in 3 days. Mail was carried in prop-jet Britannias with at least 3 stops in transit. These days the trip is completed in one hop by aircraft over 200 knots speedier.

Two years ago ALL the Christmas cards sent to me from various parts of the UK , and ALL posted during the first week of December, were delivered to me en masse on the 9th of January.

Fings ain't what they used to was.

When I mail anything to my missus it normally takes about two-three weeks to arrive. The best is ten days. I expect it gets to BKK pretty sharpish but then appears to go into stasis. When it finally reaches the provinces she claims that the local postie in Surin is a 'lazy bugger' who can't be bothered to ride all the way out to her village with just one letter. Instead, he waits until a bit more has piled-up in his out-tray before making that ardous journey.

It took her awhile to realise that just sticking a local stamp on a letter and dropping it in the nearest postbox doesn't actually qualify for 'airmail'. When I explained to her this morning how much it costs (from replies kindly given above) she wailed "But that's the same price as a dish of som tam!"

My birthday card or a dish of som tam - the agony of choice for her...

Give me strength.
