hi

my wife and me are booked to go on holiday from mar-apr 2012. my wife came to uk on settlement visa and she just asked the question, "with me leaving the uk for one month, will this affect my application for ilr as i have read that you need to be here for 2 years"

my question is does the 2 years mean she has to stay here for 2 years or can we go and leave when we want?

we were planning to drive around europe in the summer as well

thanks

Holidays are quite acceptable! It is only a problem if you are going to spend extended periods outside the UK.

When we came back from a holiday in Thailand the immigration officer just asked how long my wife had been on holiday and straight through!

There are no problems with holidays in Europe, or anywhere else. She can go on holiday anywhere she likes while living in the UK with a settlement visa.

The only problem would come if when applying for ILR she had spent more time out of the UK than in during the previous two years.

Of course, she would have to obtain the appropriate visa, if any; but then, so does everyone.
