Five Killed in Crash Resulting from Shooting

A total of five people died in a crash caused by a drive-by shooting early this morning.

A witness in the truck says the attack resulted from a brawl between one of its passengers with someone at a pub.

Three of the victims were identified as Somchai Sitthipong, Worrawuth Wicchupanyapong, and Arom Saelao.

The incident also injured two other people.

Four men were first sent to Bangpakok and Ratburana hospitals for medical treatment and two of them later died.

The shooting took place at the entrance of Soi Suksawas 23, just 1.5 meter from Bangpakok Hospital.

Investigators said they found ammunition rounds and two 9 millimeter-caliber bullets in the sedan believed to be carrying the gunman.

They also found two bullet holes on the left side of the pickup truck.

A witness who was a passenger in the truck said it was carrying 10 friends from a pub on Rama III Road.

The witness said one of his friends had a quarrel with a group of revelers at the pub before their truck was shot more than 10 times by a gunman.

He believes the shooting was a result of the brawl.

He said the attack caused the truck to crash into a tree.

Investigators are now in the process of identifying and searching for the six in the suspected sedan for interrogation.

Bangkok bar fight leads to road shooting, 5 deaths

The Nation

Five were killed when their pick-up truck hit a tree during their efforts to flee from a car chasing and shooting at them early Friday, police said.

A teenager, who was in the chasing Honda car, turned himself to police later in the day but denied that he drove the car and took part in the shooting.

Police said Somchai Sonthipong, 20, Worawut Wichupanyapong, 23, Arom Saelao, 23, Chawal Thongpradit, 18 and Natee Iamsa, 19, were killed after their truck hit the tree at the Mahaisawan Intersection at 4 am.

A survivor told police that a tire of the truck was shot at, causing the vehicle to lost control. The impact of the crash sent the five victims and another man flown out of the back of the truck. The other one was severely injured.

Later on at 10 am, Ekkarin Nilbai, 19, turned himself at the Ratburna police station, saying he was among the passengers of the chasing car but he did not shoot at the truck.

Ekkrain said the car belonged to his father but he claimed he did not drive it.

Ekkarin said the chasing and shooting occurred after the two groups quarreled in a bar.

ah......... the famous thai temper and loss of face.

what ever happened to talking it out or a good ol fist fight. winner is the one still standing

havent met a thai man yet who would stand and fight. even if they do and get beaten, they go get a gun.

cowards the lot of them and this incident reinforces that. angry.png

What an idiotic comment! I rarely hear of fights in my homeland, UK, being settled by Marquess of Queensberry rules - rather it is a man or a gang which dishes out punishment with a gun or a knife, or maybe beats a lone man to death. "Haven't met a Thai man yet who would stand and fight" Good grief man, how many Thai men have you challenged to a fight?

Typical mentality of young Thai's, get a gun and lets have a shoot out.

If they were not would be thugs there would not be a gun in the car or carried by them.

When caught it will be blamed on ghosts or my Grandfather made me do it, we cant loose face can we

for years the law of the gun and the wild west or in this case east applies -- by either a drunken cop - or son of you know who - the easy way to settle any arguement is the "make my day~ and add a nite on the booze with a belly full of mekong or JW and you sure have the right ingredients for trouble - seems the simple way to settle any argements here in the land of smiles - from vocational school disputes - fights over ladies - or what ever - easy to pull out the odd dirty harry piece - so much for gun control and from what i hear not expsnsive and easy to aquire - the fight might start in the pub but for sure willl end up on the street with guns blazing - nothing new - i have even seens guys with guns tucked in their belts buying the nites supply at 7= but then again this is the wild west - and for the up country guys - come spend some time in bkk - you will understand so forget the stupid comments pls - will agree with thequiteman -

I passed by the entrance to this soi - busy road leading to Nakhon Nakorn Road and Big C - Ratburana - this morning at around 10.15 AM. Obviously I had no inkling as to what had occurred there just a few hours previously.

In the early hours of the morning around here - like most other areas in BKK - the normal constraints of law and order that appear to exist during daylight hours go out the window. The motorcycle gangs roam the streets - night-time entertainment venues seem to be a law unto themselves - violence or no violence - up to them on a whim - and the police are all too often exposed as being woefully inadequate - sparse - slow to react - and incompetent in dangerous situations.

Pub brawl turns into fatal shootout claiming five lives

THE NATION

30174219-01_big.jpg

A suspect involved in a drive-and-shoot incident in Bangkok early yesterday, in which five people were killed and five others wounded after their vehicle crashed, has surrendered, Rat Burana police said yesterday.

Apart from Ekrin Nilbai, 19, who turned up yesterday, police said they knew the identity of another suspect. He will face an arrest warrant if he does not give himself up in the next few days, station chief Pol Colonel Manop Sukhonthaphat said.

Meanwhile, the Wat Phraya Krai police station will also be investigated because the shooting took place after 4am when Ekrin and the victims were drinking at a pub off Rama III Road, which is under its jurisdiction, said Pol Maj-General Phisit Phisutthisak, a deputy Bangkok police chief.

Drinking establishments are required to close by 1am, though the closing time is often extended to 2am.

The Rat Burana police station is investigating the case because the shooting took place on Suksawad Road, which is under its jurisdiction, though the pub in question is in an area under the Wat Phraya Krai police.

According to witnesses, the 10 victims had left the pub in a Mitsubishi Triton pickup truck and were waiting for the lights to change at the Mahai Sawan intersection before a Honda Civic stopped nearby and someone started shooting. The Honda carried six passengers, including Ekrin.

A high-speed chase ensued, which resulted in the truck hitting a tree before bouncing off to hit the traffic island. Three passengers died immediately as the impact of the collision threw them out of the truck.

Phisit said initial inspection revealed that two firearms - a .38-calibre pistol and a 6.35mm rifle - had been used. Police are also studying footage from a security camera nearby.

Manop said the Honda Civic had changed hands several times and was currently registered under Ekrin's father's name. The station chief also said Ekrin was already wanted by the Bang Yi Khan police station for attempted murder, and that the suspect's claim of innocence was not believable.

Police quoted one of the victims, New Krongthong, as saying that Ekrin and his group had clashed previously. He also recounted that two armed people were seen getting out of the Honda Civic and walking towards the pickup truck after it had hit the tree before they decided to cross the street and run away.

Ekrin has so far been charged with attempted murder, carrying firearms without permission and using it in public. The officer said Ekrin had been claiming that he did not shoot and was instead trying to stop the other suspect from shooting.

Two other passengers of the pickup truck succumbed to their injuries at a hospital yesterday. Police have identified two bullet holes in the truck.

The widow of one of the victims said she lost control of the pickup after one of the wheels was shot at. She said six people were sitting in the truck's bed and four others were in the passenger cab. She said the Honda Civic also rammed into the truck's rear, which made the truck spin and fling the six people sitting in the bed of the truck out.

A brawl originating at Soi 23 and continuing with a high speed chase and shootout in another tourist area. According to the press, no tourists were shot at , wounded, or killed and no tourist reported seeing or hearing the shootout despite the fact that the brawl started in busy Soi 23. Business and tourist arrivals at Suvarnibhumi are expected to be normal according to the most informed Thai officials.

"6.35 mm rifle" ??? 6.35mm/.25ACP is normally uses in small handguns - never heard of it used in a rifle (which doesn't mean that it doesn't exist.)

How do you fire a rifle in a Honda Civic with 5 other people? With difficulty!

Agreed. Whenever something negative is reported it generates numerous comments suggesting that such things only happen in Thailand, with the stated or implied view that back in FarangLand such things would never happen. The recent riots in UK and the all too typical football hooligans are conveniently forgotten as are drive-by shootings, school shootings, postal shootings etc in the US and everywhere else in the world. And the majority of such incidents are the result of wounded pride or the need to enhance one's fragile ego.

Saving face is not just a Thai thing. In fact judging by the ballistic rants on this message board and the seemingly continuous reports of deplorable drunken farang behaviour, it would seem that no slight or dubious comment is too small not to launch some farang into orbit.

The news event is sad and certainly demonstrates foolish and pointless behavior, but to suggest that such things are a product of Thai culture or could only take place in Thailand is ridiculous.

Well said. Not knowing Quietman's age it's difficult to reason whether the response is driving by immaturity or not. Assuming Qm is no young pup, his comment is indeed poor.

Let's see...

The pub is supposed to close at 1 am... but it's allowed to stay open until 2 am... But on this occasion, these folks are leaving the pub (perhaps at closing time) around 4 am.... Good job, police guys....

And then, 10 folks in one pickup truck, four in the cab and six in the back, driving around at 4 am in morning after a night of drinking.... Guess it's safe to say no seatbelts for the six folks in the bed of the pickup, most of them now dead.

And the one guy who initially turned himself in, from among the sedan occupants, turns out to be wanted for attempted murder in some different case... Glad to see the police once again being pro-active... The normal SOP seems to be never to actually go out and arrest anyone... but simply to sit in the police station and wait for the wanted folks to turn themselves in.

Has some change occurred in Thai society ?? 12 years ago I sure do not remember very many anger based gun incidents. Now they seem to be a regular fixture of the news...... Another crack in the jai yen yen crap that is carefully taught to new farangs. Note to self : do not drink in pubs with Thai men. Oh wait, I have always done that and never had a problem.

The reality is 12 years ago, one didn't have the one-stop, all-you-can-post, 'news' features from TV. The locals have been knocking lumps off each other for ages. It's just that it was only reported in the local media with the funny squigly writing and unfathomable language that didn't feature on our radar as we were too busy getting pissed and shagging.

it's hardly unique to thailand... in the US they call lost of face disrespect. and if u start a fight ppl don't even think of using their fists...they automatically assume you wanna shoot it out. that's why its best to not even open your mouth or let things escalate unless you're ready for what might follow.
