PM: Government aims to develop women’s roles in society

BANGKOK, 29 January 2012 (NNT) – During her speech at the opening session of the “Women as the Way Forward” discussion at the 42nd World Economic Forum, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra stated that the Thai government is determined to enhance the role of women in society in order to contribute to a more stable economic and political development.

The Thai premier expressed gratitude for having been born and raised in the Thai society where gender equality has never been an issue. Thus, she was given the chance of high education and later held an executive position at a leading company. Eventually, she was elected by the Thai people to become the first female prime minister of Thailand.

However, she admitted that, at present, women in many parts of the world still face the problem of gender gap. In comparison with men, women still have less access to education and capital sources. Meanwhile, certain rights are still being restricted to the male gender. Furthermore, women are still victims of sexual harassment and violence.

Ms. Yingluck stated that the eradication of gender inequality must begin by looking into the deep-rooted culture and social concepts.

She added that the Thai government has planned to set up the National Development Fund for Women to promote the female gender in the society to become an important force of creation and development for Thailand. Additionally, the government would focus on the education of young girls in order to elevate their quality of life.

The Prime Minister concluded that Thailand hopes its part in promoting gender equality would contribute to a sustainable economic and political development of the global community.
