Pet Snakes

OK. 90% of you (including my wife) will say, "He's crazy." That may be so, but here goes.

While living in the US, I had two ball pythons as pets (yes, you can handle them and they give wonderful neck massages). I was looking at a couple of web sites of non-poisonous snakes in Thailand, but no ball pythons. There were a couple of larger varieties of python and various other smaller snakes in the under-150 cm range. Another popular snake was the corn snake, but I didn't see them as native to Thailand.

I there anybody else out there than keeps non-poisonous snakes? Are they commercially available? I've been to a few fairs and markets where they have pets (dogs, cats, fish, etc.) but no snakes.

Also, if there are some available, what about food? Mine in the US would eat pre-killed, frozen mice, so they were very low maintenance. I'm sure I would have to go to live food here.

Please keep the snide remarks to a minimum. I am serious about this and I'd like to get some real info.

I got my ball python from Chatuchak at a small reptile shop near the fish section, rather close to JJ Mall. They also supplied me with everything, tank, bedding, and packs of pre-killed frozen mice. I just heat them up under a hair dryer and hang them in the tank using forceps.

Go for a wonder around Chatuchak if your near, I believe the shop is called exotic pets.

Thanks for the lead. I was wondering if Chatuchak might have them. Last time I was there, I noticed they had a large pet section. However, I wasn't looking for snakes at the time so I didn't pay any attention.

Next time I get to Bangkok (I'm in Khon Kaen), I'll stop and have a look.

I breed snakes, I specialise in venomous snakes but have a few constrictors. Not realy been a fan of python regius/bull python, but I know some people who sell them and breed them in chatuchak, they range in prices from ฿500-฿50'000.

You won't find corn snakes as a native spices as they come from California.

You won't have to feed live food, you can buy frozen, yes you will find the snakes and even crocodiles around the JJ Mall part of the market where they have all the animals even monkeys.

first hit is here http://www.dld.go.th/webenglish/move1.html#im2 They have contacts on the bottom. If it is CITIES then you will need documentation to prove they are not wild caught etc. Mostly they talk about cats, dogs and farm animals though I'm afraid.

Honestly, i find JJ overpriced. Not sure if there are pet shops out of Bangkok's CBD that sells for cheap.

In Chiangmai, go and talk to Marina in the katoeys' bar called Marina in Loi Khroa Road (inside the small arcade). She has an albino python.
