Apple is Winning the App War Against Android

App-Stores.jpg

New evidence released by Business Week and Flurry indicates that Apple is winning the mobile app war against Android.

The Apple App Store now attracts three times as many app submissions than Google’s Android Market, with many developers preferring iOS mainly because of the device fragmentation issues that continue to plague Android.

Nobody likes to write for Android because all those different screen sizes are a pain, the dev environment is horrible, and android users generally don't like to pay for their apps as much.

Apple carefully manages fragmentation, Android lets happen whatever happens. So Android will always be behind in apps and software, there's no way around it. On the plus side, Android phones come in a variety of flavors and sizes while the iPhone is restricted to a few models that all feature the same screen size. It's a trade-off.

BTW the Android fragmentation is more a problem for the platform than it is for the users. Users couldn't care less if there's 50 flavors of Angry Birds, or 2; if there's 10,000 apps or 100,000. As long as those apps that they want to use are available - who cares.

I think it's an issue for Google though - if phone manufacturers want to pull up their stakes and switch to another platform there's less of a cost. Right now Android isn't winning because it's so good but because it's really the only alternative to iOS. Samsung is working on their own Oses and others might be too. For now these home brew solutions can't compete with the feature set of Android but maybe one day they will?

In a world where software is the biggest differentiator all the hardware makers would love to own their own awesome mobile OS, that's for sure. They all want to be Apple. Having to make do with the one OS that everyone else is using too is clearly less than ideal.

The hardware makers are relatively clueless about software - latest proof various ill-fated attempts to skin Android where most agree that the skins are either worse, or much worse than stock. But who says they will remain clueless forever? Samsung is selling so many phones, one has to wonder why they aren't doing their own OS.

Who remembers when the top iApps were fart-related? ;)

Most manufacturer's skin Android the one's I've used are fine. I love Samsung's 3.1 interface on the Tab 10.1

Samsung has their own Linux OS, Bada.

Not sure about the veracity of the OP's article, but Android sold 76 million units in Q4 2011, Apple a respectable 37 million units.

Android based phone sales have overtaken Symbian to lead the market in the fourth quarter of last year according to the latest Gartner report.

Android drastically increased its Q4 sales from 30 million units in 2010 to just under 76 million units in 2011. The move saw Android’s market share rise from 30.5 per cent in 2010 to a dominant 50.9 per cent last year.

Android’s rival Symbian saw a dramatic decrease in its Q4 sales, selling around 17 million units in Q4 2011. It’s market share reduced from 33.2 per cent in Q4 2010 to 11.7 per cent in Q4 2011.

Apple’s iOS operating system also experienced strong growth, selling around 35 million units - more than doubling its Q4 2010 sales.

iOS has become the second most dominant phone operating system with 23.8 per cent market share.

Speaking of Android skins, it is nice to have options...I've been on AOSP for a long time as I love the Application scrolling rolodex format. But then I can choose among as many launchers as I want.

When will Android finally give up and die?

Probably long after Nokia is gone.

With Microsoft help Nokia could be market leader again i couple of years. At least serious player in the market for sure.

The old saying of evil corporation Microsoft is not applicable anymore. It's Google who's evil and Apple is the corporate giant it once exploited in it's marketing and on top of that it seems iOS will be the new virus trap soon if they continue to leave this kind of mistakes in their OS.

Wall Street Journal has caught Google using another questionable online tracking technique, one that will likely further inflame those who think the company is evil.

Google has been "tricking" Apple's Safari browser into letting Google monitor Apple users' web-surfing behavior, the WSJ reports--even users who want this kind of tracking to be blocked.
