Nong Khai Fireballs

Featured Replies

I have 4 days between Ubon Thani & Nakhon Phanom to see the fireballs and the Illuminated Boat Parade at NOP, so will be sleeping 2 nights in Nong Khai and 2 in NOP.

Can anyone advise if this fireballs apprearance always happen on the full moon night or for a few nights ? Is it worth all the trouble to get there just for it ? Will there be any other events beside the fireballs thing ? Wondering what else can I do or see if the fireballs don't appear. I have read that taking the bus and back can be quite an ordeal.

The Naga fireballs are a once a year deal,

It's the full moon at the end of October, and only for one night, after the rains retreat

I've been several times and think it's well worth it, but I live not far from where it happens. Lots of people don't seem to think it's worth going too.

If you like drinking with thousands of Thai guys and gals on the river bank, or playing with fireworks and lighting one of those chinese lantern kite thingies, then you'd have a lot of fun. Likewise some areas have a real kinda carnival atmosphere, with rides for kids, markets and games. But if you're going expressly to see the naga fireballs, you might be disappointed (At least I was disappointed with them anyway, I had great fun with the other activities though)

I have been in Pak Khat (90 km. east of Nong Khai) during the Naga fireball event. It is a small town with 6-10.000 people. It is a nice and easygoing party/gathering of the local people. I enjoyed it. There is a square down at Mekong, and a hotel next to the square where you can watch the fireballs and attend the party. I didn't see any fireballs that night, but the next day I saw a red light like a New Year rocket over Mekong, but one of the locals told me it was a fireball :-) Who knows ??

Thanks. Can you find out for me what will be the date for this year ? Is it Oct 28th or 29th ?

According to my Calander full moon in October is Tuesday Oct 30, but best to check before travelling.

I don't know if I'd make a journey out of it, like I say I live close by so we go in the afternoon, stake a piece of riverbank and eat and drink while the show goes on.

This is strange. According to the Chinese Lunar Calander, it's Oct 28th but I checked that last few years reports have been that on the Fireballs have been 1 day later than Chinese full moon, but Oct 30th will be 2 laters later. I wonder if Thailand's full moon day can be different from other countries ?

According to my Thai Kubota calander, full moon is the 30th of Oct, its marked as a temple day.

Best to check when the date is a little closer, there's always write up in the paper about the fireballs and the day to go.

Thanks again. Sorry to trouble again, is there a way for me to check Thai Kubota calander online on my own without understanding Thai ? Tried to google but can't get it.

Don't think it's online, I get a free calander every New Years from Kubota because I bought a tractor from them
