2006 to be the year of the LCD screen

BANGKOK: -- Philips Electronics (Thailand) Ltd predicts smaller LCD television screens, typically below 42 inches, will have a bright future next year, driven by the World Cup 2006 in Germany, of which the company is a sponsor.

Francois Billecard, general manager of the company’s Consumer Electronics Division, said yesterday that growth in the LCD market was a global trend. In many developed countries, growth has been occurring for some time.

He estimated the LCD market in Thailand would share 50 per cent of the flat-screen television market next year, reducing the share of plasma-screen receivers.

“Another reason for the growth of LCDs is that its target group is larger than the plasma market’s,” he said.

Billecard said Philips was a global leader in flat screens and ranked among the top three brands in Thailand during the first half of this year.

He said the flat-screen television market consisted of three segments – innovative, selective and classical – with those in the innovative segment quickly adopting new innovative products regardless of price. Those in the selective segment consider the technology’s value for money, and those in the classical segment are price-conscious.

He said that in general, 25 per cent of buyers of flat-screen television sets fell in the innovative or selective segments, another 25 per cent were in the classical group and the remaining 50 per cent belonged to the low-end market.
