Human Traffickers Force 11 Boys to Pose as Novice Monks

SATTAHIP: -- Police arrested a gang of human traffickers who forced 11 boys to dress as novice monks to beg for donations from the unsuspecting public. They have to make as least 10,000 baht in donations per day.

Sattaheep police in Chon Buri Province arrested a gang of human traffickers who forced 11 boys to dress as novice monks to seek donations of goods and cash at the Sattaheep fresh market. They claimed the money and goods will be used in the construction of a temple in Kanchanaburi Province.

Police arrested 4 gang members at P.P. House Hotel where they rented 8 rooms. Four have been identified as Boonnipa Sripiengchan, 48; Nopanan Deejit, 29; Thongchai Sripiengchan, 20; and Jaroon Onyaem, 54. Police also confiscated a donation box, 9 alms bowls, 11 novice monk's robes, 2 loudspeakers and 11,460 baht in cash.

Another gang member Thawat Boonkoom, 42, was not at the hotel when the police conducted the arrest.

Police also found 11 boys with shaved heads in the rooms. They told police their parents owe money to the gang leader so she took them with the promise that she'll find them jobs so they can work off their parents' debts or lied that she'll have them enter the monkhood to make merit in return for clearing debts. However, they were forced to pose as novice monks to trick the unsuspecting public into making donations and are fed methamphetamine.

If they can make 10,000 baht, they will be allowed to return to their hotel rooms to rest. If not, they have to be out until late and are sometimes assaulted.

The suspects still denied all charges.

Drug addicted and physically abused fake novice monks rescued by Sattahip Police

SATTAHIP:-- A woman accused or organizing a team of minors who posed as novice monks and were forced to collect money for her has been arrested by Sattahip Police.

In a disturbing twist, the children aged as young as 11 were forced to consume illegal drugs so they would becoming addicted, forcing them to work hard otherwise the woman would refused to give them further drugs.

Police were made aware of the group, who are believed to be operating around Thailand and information suggested they were now operating in Sattahip. Officers conducted a raid of a rented room close to the Sattahip Market, in conjunction with Social Welfare Officers and the Human Help Network Foundation Thailand and arrested the alleged ring-leader; Khun Boonipar aged 48 and four other men who are connected with the operation.

Eleven Children aged from 11 up to 17 were detained and later questioned. They revealed that they were forced to work for the woman as their parents had accrued debts with her and were unable to pay her back. Instead the children were sent to work with her and revealed how they would wear orange robes and be forced to collect at least 10,000 Baht cash a day from unsuspecting members of the public who thought they were making merit by donating money and food to the novice monks. If they failed to make the target, they would be allegedly beaten.

Gang forced boys to beg, police claim

CHONBURI: -- Four members of an alleged human trafficking gang forced 11 boys to shave their heads and dress as Buddhist novices to ask for alms and donations at Sattahip Market, police said Tuesday.

Parents complained to police their child had told them by phone that he and other boys aged 11-17 were detained in hotel rooms and forced to dress as novices to collect the offerings and donations in Greater Bangkok and Eastern Thailand. Each day they had to make Bt10,000 or be assaulted, the child said.

The police probe located five accused gangmembers and the 11 children at the PP House Hotel. They rescued the kids and arrested alleged gang leader Boonnipa Sripiangchan, 48, and three men. Another, suspect, Thawat Boonkhum, 42, had left the hotel before police arrived. Although all suspects maintained their innocence, the boys told police Boonnipa took them from their parents who owed her money to work off the debts. They allege the gang also forced them to take yaba and ask for alms at various markets. Police investigations found the gang, operating in separate groups in various provinces, had forced some 100 boys into this activity.
