yannic Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Since I would like to use my Iphone for GPS when touring in Thailand, I am looking for a Motorbike Cigarette Socket and Socket Holder, preferable good quality and water resistent, with fuse. The RAM Mount I got already. I do like the SW Motech one, if I could get that one here in Bangkok I would be very happy. But another one would do also. Here some pictures and description from SW Motech of what I mean: SW-MOTECH flush-mount 12-volt Cigarette-style socket with fused cable harness. Includes a weatherproof cap and flush-mount hardware. The included ATC fuse is 5 amps; device and harness is rated for a maximum current of 30 amp. The cable length is 150cm. Can be used with SW-MOTECH Universal Mounting Bracket for Flush-Mount Handle Bar Clamps, Or the bracket can be mounted to any flat surface if your bike is not fitted with flat bar clamps. 12-volt Cigarette-style socket for a 12 volt power outlet. A very useful power outlet for mobile phone chargers and the Socket Holder Thanks for any help.
VocalNeal Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 I believe BMW bikes come with one standard so you should be able to buy/order one from the parts dept..
Disting Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 WWW.ebay.com. Hundreds on there and they deliver. Have ordered 2 for Thailand already.
BigBikeBKK Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Instead of a cigarette lighter why not get the plug designed specifically for your phone? I got this power cord from Powerlet and am very happy with it: Not aware of any retailers that stock these in Thailand. They're about $50 at most online shops. Ordered mine from revzilla: http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/powerlet-apple-3g-3gs-4g-and-itouch-battery-harness Ride On! T

I got this power cord from Powerlet and am very happy with it: Tony I was thinking about you when I saw your video on the race track, because you are using also an IPhone and the RAM mount. So I was hoping you would answer as well. Yes the Powerlet is an interesting alternative, unfortunately RevZilla requests a minimum of 300 USD for international orders. And I do not need anything else at the moment. Also they send with EMS and that will cost me a lot of taxes here in Bangkok. Will also have a look at ebay but would prefer anything locally, so if anyone knows a place...

You might want to try BritBike in RCA- I'm told they stock some powercords, but sorry, I have no idea about selection or prices. Best of luck! Tony

easylife Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Or you could follow what this guy did, but just make it work for your bike. I don't think it matters to much about the leads being waterproof you could just through a little snap bag over the end when not in use and tuck it away somewhere. Hope this helps Link:

VocalNeal Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 that's surely a possibility but if they order it in Germany then I can order it as well by myself from abroad. Irrelevant now you have found what you want. But yes an individual can order whatever he wants from abroad at US/EU retails rates then pay shipping. Duty is a lottery sometimes one gets away with it sometimes not. Maybe for a socket yes but for larger items no. Much easier to just but what is already here.
NormanW Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Here was/is my solution for a power socket - an in-car 3 way adapter/extension powered straight from the battery.
marstons Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 got mine off E Bay delivered to Thailand, i purchased the marine version as they are more water proof. got one with a fuse in, was an option.
TongueThaied Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Tim Mayhew at www.pashint.com ships a lot of stuff to Thailand. You can see iPhone specific connectors here: http://www.pashnit.com/product/powerlet/wire_ipod.html And you can see all the generic ones here: http://www.pashnit.com/product/powerlet/powerlet_outlets.html Pashit will ship in a small padded mailed costing you only $12 or $13 for shipping. WARNING: You must be in email communication with Tim ([email protected]) and INSIST that somebody hand write the label with return address from "Tim Mayhew," NOT "pashnit.com." They normally use a computer generated lable and postage, which will grab the eye of Thai Customs. If the label is hand written with the name of no commercial entity appearing, the item will more than probably sail through duty free. Good luck.
yannic Posted February 23, 2012 Author Posted February 23, 2012 (edited) thanks to all for your useful posts and advises. Now there are several options. I was thinking that Tony's solution and also from Pashnit is good as it saves another adaptor but in the end I think I better go for the cigarette socket (evenso I don't smoke he he he) no honest you can connect anything to the cigarette socket and charge it, I could also use my tire pump and so on. Called already Touratech, but they don't have the socket available, they need to order it. I guess I still go there on Saturday and have a look what else they offer. Saleslady spoke excellent English! Most probably I will order this one: Mounting kit for cigarette lighter socket with fuse Edited February 23, 2012 by yannic

Although not the quality of your proposed unit it works a treat. All the best.
VocalNeal Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 ...I got mine from Big C... Most stuff is already here if one spends the time to look.
BigBikeBKK Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 ...I got mine from Big C... Most stuff is already here if one spends the time to look. I've had dreadful luck with electronic appliances and gadgets bought from BigC. Whether it's a blender, a flashlight or an angle grinder, most have been either DOA or haven't lasted more than a week... And when you try to bring a defective product back for a refund or exchange they always want to try and fix it. No, I won't waste any more time or money on BigC garbage... Pay a little more and buy from HomePro or TrueValue and at least you know you'll be getting a quality product and good customer service if there's a problem.

Amorn if close as they are a specialist electric/electronic shop, but yes not necessarily automotive. They are also nationwide and have a a service dept. Yes, I know that's where Norm got his plug, and I was just commenting on the bad luck I've had with all things electric that I've bought from that chain. Then again- a 12V automotive cigarette plug is about as simple as it gets Not familiar with Amorn. Is that a national chain? I've been looking for 300 Ohm half watt resistors and keep coming up empty, even at Pantip plaza... Would be most grateful if you know of anyplace where I could find such a simple thing

Would be most grateful if you know of anyplace where I could find such a simple thing I'll walk to KFC on 71 for lunch and on the way by have a look. As you say should be quite easy. I've got a choice of two places. How many do you need. If they don't have I'll ask them to order. If they have them I'll tell you where it is. No point in you going there if they don't have. I

I Cheers Mate! Like you said earlier- you can find just about anything here in Thailand, if you just know where to look! But man, if you don't know where to look, it sure can be frustrating trying to track down such relatively simple and common items! Anyway- if you can find 300 ohm resistors in half watt or 1 watt should work too, I need only 4, but would take a dozen if they have them. I'm using them to kill the FI warning light on bikes with disconnected O2 sensors. Thanks again! Tony
VocalNeal Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 I need only 4, but would take a dozen if they have them. For everyone else. TV repair/electronic component shop Sukhumvit 71 between soi 15 - 17 opp. Nigerian Embassy. They've got a least 100, if not 200.

The other place if anyone is looking for a wide variety of electronic components, is Ban Mo Market, off Thanon Ban Mo, not far from China Town and Klong Thom Market. There is a mall in there with component sellers of every possible description. Klong Thom is better for automotive stuff, but Ban Mo is the place if you're an electronics geek! (several vendors who only sell resistors... Every possible size and rating imaginable.) Cheers.
