The prettiest part of the trip IMHO is 2-3 hours south of Chiang Mai, when the train winds up the side of the valley to cross a mountain-range, very beautiful bamboo/jungle/gorge scenery.

Make sure your train does this in daylight - the 21.30 (?) from Bangkok is good for this.

Agreed. The scenery is fabulous.

The railway is perfectly safe and has a very good record.

There haven't been any accidents for over a week now.

Don't listen to the horror stories from all the nambi-pambies who can't take a bit of adventure. Listen to me, I have travelled on that train, a few years back, and it is perfectly safe.

I am nearly back to normal now and most of the scars have healed.

Just to put your mind at rest here is a picture I took

Are you sure that you are "Nearly back to Normal"?

You have totally the right idea in my opinion. You get to see so much from the train. All of those little villages and towns you pass through which offer you a snapshot of places and lives we would never usually see. As mentioned, the scenery is also stunning in parts. The bit I like the most is about an hour north of Lopburi when the central plains begin to give way to the hills of the North and far away to the East, you can see the Issan Plateau rising into the hazy horizon. Simply stunning.

Theres a train that leaves Bangkok at 0830 which arrives in CM at about 1930ish that does most of the trip in daylight, and theres also a train which leaves CM at 0830 and arrives in Bangkok at 2000ish which again does most of the trip in daylight. I'm sure someone will put me right on the times.

Love the photo :o

That'll teach the backpackers not to travel 3rd-class :D
