Blowfish kills two Burmese Fishermen and leaves six seriously ill in Sattahip

SATTAHIP;-- Two fishermen are dead and six are seriously ill after consuming part of their catch on their boat in the early hours of Monday.

The fishermen are Burmese and are believed to have consumed Black-lined Blowfish whilst on their way back to port. The two dead men and one of the seriously ill men who is currently in a coma, are believed to have consumed eggs inside the fish, and the others are thought to have consumed the meat of the fish only.

A lethal dose of Teradotoxin, which is a poison and a natural defense for blowfish, is believed to have killed the two men and left a third in a coma.

UPDATE

Burmese Fishermen poisoned by Blowfish improving at Sattahip Hospital

SATTAHIP:--The six Burmese fishermen who became seriously ill after consuming Black-Lined Blowfish are still in Hospital in Sattahip District but are all now out of danger and expected to make a full recovery.

On Tuesday we visited them at the Queen Sirigit Hospital to check on their progress and first checked on Mr. Xu aged 20 who is known to have consumed the fish eggs. Although he is still in ICU he is now on the road to recovery and should be moved to a regular ward within the next 72 hours. Doctors have been interviewing the other 5 fishermen who showed less serious symptoms.

They ate only the fish meat and skin. Doctors tell us the most dangerous parts of the Blowfish to consume are the eggs, liver and skin and the deaths occurred due to paralysis which forced the heart muscles to stop working.
