Toyota pours more investment to Thailand

BANGKOK: -- Toyota Motor Corporation, Japan on Wednesday announced Bt6 billion investment to increase its engine production in Thailand, showing yet another mark of confidence to the Thai economy despite the great floods last year.

In a statement, the company said that through the investment through Siam Toyota Manufacturing Co Ltd (STM), the production capacity of Toyota Corolla ZR benzene engines will be raised by 100,000 units annually, creating around 200 new additional jobs, from 3,000 at present.

The expansion will include increasing the capacity for the casting of aluminum materials. The expansion programme at the plant in Amata-Nakorn Industrial Estate, Chon Buri, is projected to be completed in 2014.

Taking advantage of the glut of now-unemployed, highly trained Honda workers: a brilliant strategy by Toyota.

This is definitely a sign of strong ties between Japan and Thailand as well, even if Toyota is a private company; I just hope Thailand doesn't lose their negotiating angle over the medium-term. Given the investment/employment climate here, this is certainly as big a win for Thailand as for Toyota. However, if successive governments are forced to kowtow to Japanese business interests every time there is a disaster/political problem, it will only exacerbate the local perception that the Thai government doesn't care about Thais. I have distinct memories of the comments that were floating during the flood crisis as the bulk of resources were shifted towards saving the industrial estates ( which was admittedly economically prudent but politically suicidal [rock and a hard place]).

WOW,

This must have been a brain wrenching decision to make by the Toyota management. The plant is new, located in an area if there ever is flood there I'm in deep kimchee because I will be up to my neck in water.

TOYOTA: BEWARE ! ! !

LOVE my Toyota; but HATE 'Toyota-Thailand' ! ! !

I know how they can afford to "pour" all this new "investment" into Thailand: By way of RIP-OFFS through their service departments ! !

Nowadays, when you take your beloved Toyota in for a service check, they will try to convince you that items such as Brakes or Air-Conditioning are in urgent need of repair/replacement . . . . well, after the first few occasions I went and double-checked with a bona-fide mechanic and it turned-out that Toyota was simply trying to rip me off ! ! There was NOTHING wrong with my Brake-Pads (at least 75% !) and the same applied to my aircon-system. From spending time in their waiting room, I realized that they do this to as many people as they can . . . .

It is very clear that this (Revenue-Earning-Drive) originates by the management, which is pretty sickening, if you ask me ?

TOYOTA: BEWARE ! ! !
