Is an appointment needed for a spouse visa at VFS or can we just turn up early and wait our turn(all day).

On the VFS website there are very few interview days available and none that suit us.

I have telephoned them. They said they only release dates around 5 days before other than 'special' days(saturdays) where there is a 1500baht surcharge.

Appointment's only, so you'll have to work with what's available or wait until they offer dates that suit you. There wont be any kind of interview either. The applicant just goes along and gets their biometrics taken then hands over the application and fee. I've never heard of the special Saturday service, for a price, but it wouldn't surprise me.

It's true. See this :

If it is inconvenient for you to attend an appointment at the visa application centre during the regular opening hours of Monday to Friday 08.00 – 15.00, you can schedule a Prime Time appointment on a Saturday for an additional charge of 1500THB. To access these appointments please select the Prime Time option when scheduling an appointment and pay the 1500THB fee in cash when you attend the visa application centre.
