This morning my neighbor told me 2 Farangs were walking around the Moobaan last night ringing on lots of doorbells before they said wrong house and moved on. We live 30km outside of Bkk proper and there are only 2 western households on the Moobaan.

Turned out they were looking for an unoccupied house to burgle. Not sure if they hid out or came back later and there was a wedding party going on 2 sub sois down butThey dragged a safe downstairs before abandoning it as too heavy and stole a laptop. Repairing the hardwood floor will be the most costly thing.

As they were Farangs no Thai challenged them nor did security stop and escort them, maybe part of their plan.

I've never heard of this outside of Bangkok proper and wonder are things that bad?

I keep hearing of westerners losing job, home, savings and/or pensions, currency post recession not cutting it, are we having to resort to crime (white collar aside) to remain in paradise?

More likely a couple of scuzz bag druggies looking for some quick cash. Being westerners it shouldn't be too long before they are identified while trying it again.

Certainly hope so, the wife is concerned about being home alone. I told her any Farang wandering around will probably be beaten and handcuffed if it isn't me or the other chap who live here.

Apparently the Thai gold diggers have not figured out that some Farangs are worst off than Thais'.

There are all kinds of farangs in this country.

I guess you hang out in the wrong neighbourhood.

Life is tough for many farangs, just like for many Thais. Looks like enterprising crooks from Western countries have been bit by the travel bug and may be practicing their scams here. I first heard of farang crooks in Thailand over 2 decades ago, but these crooks which you seem to have encountered seem to be more brazen.

I was friends with a 'farang' for years and found out that she was in fact a fugitive, with family members on Interpol's Wanted list. Thais are mostly on to this, because it looks good for them if the thieves are not Thai (see the Grand Palace; I remember seeing signs warning tourists of farang bag-snatchers). This country is an ideal hideout for the world's runners. Prudence is prudent.

Just replacing racial terms with other ones to see how it soundsbiggrin.png

Life is tough, life is tougher when you're stupid.

Criminals are the lowest form of life, even lower than politicians.

Actually you just changed words which were related to nationality to words relating to race. Pretty stupid actually.

'Farang' is a nationality? Really? Which country is that then?

Sure its not a term used for racial profiling based on a person's physical characteristics?

It means "foreigner" i.e not Thai. Yes, it is usually used for westerners who are usually Caucasian, but not always. It's not as cut an dried as the poster was trying to make out.

It certainly does not mean "foreigner." A good example is Andrew Biggs; he is a Thai national meaning he is a citizen of the country of Thailand.

Ask any Thai if Andrew Biggs is a falang and they will surely say yes.

Sooo, if he is a Thai national AND a falang, then they cannot be opposing terms can they......clearly "falang" means white person....full stop.

In addition all the toothless stall holders where we live shout 'farang baby' whenever my wife walks past with our son. This is because my son has very light skin, not because he is a foreigner, as his mother is Thai and he holds a Thai passport. If he had dark skin they wouldnt say anything. The term is totally 100% based on physical appearance which is determined by race.

You are wrong.....full stop.

Andrew Biggs I believe does not have Thai nationality so your point is meaningless. Even if he did, I don't believe your point as many times when I talk Thai with people I don't know they have asked me if I am Thai or "farang", simply because I can speak a little Thai with a good accent.

I don't care what you think it clearly means, the fact is that it is also used for foreign westerners who are sometimes black or latin looking too. That in addition to my point above shows It's not all about skin colour as you are trying to make out.

The point is still the same regardless. In my experience the word is clearly denoted by appearance.

Clearly you don't care what others think.

You are right, I really don't care. And people can call me a farang as much as they like, I really don't care. What is the world coming to if you can't describe someone as they are, using neutral words....

Apparently you do care or you wouldn't post.

There is no such thing as a neutral word, it is all about context. And those who refer to people (especially those they know) by race are just ignorant.

A word which depends on it's context to determine if it is being used negatively or not is what most would call a neutral word.

Every word depends on context, a word by itself is meaningless

As Wittgenstein said "the meaning of a word is its use in a language"

No, some words you can never use in anything other than a negative racist manner whatever the context, such as the "N" word, therefore the word itself is negative, not neutral. "Farang" is not the same as it can be used in a negative or positive way depending on context, therefore the word itself is neural.
