Hi,

what tablet, mainly for home use, should I buy if I only need the following:

  • ~10''
  • Wifi
  • watching TV Streams (SD) from my home-server (possible with my cheap android phone)
  • rooting must be possible. (Cyanogen)
  • Teamviever
  • Internet
  • GPS would be nice, but not so important.

I don't need GSM/Edge/Umts, Wifi is enough. (tethering)

thanks

There are probably more threads, which you can find?

While a newer generation of Android tablets have been announced they aren't available yet so the 2nd hand market may be limited, and prices may not drop as precipitously as we might hope?

Retailers like Newegg in the U.S., I realize this may not be an option for you, sell refurbished units; I've been tracking a specific model: Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1/WiFi G- P7510/16, there, and on eBay as I have a trip back next month. That unit is ~ 14,500 baht here now, my target is closer to 11,000-ish.

I looked a little bit around meanwhile.

It really seems, that tablets are a little bit over priced, compared to Europe/Germany...

Maybe better to wait for the next trip home and buy one tablet there.

Because its only a toy, I am unwilling to pay more than ~10.000 Bt.

I've seen new (as in not second hand) Lenovo tablets advertised for under 10,000 Baht at PowerBuy.

10'' ?

If yes, I will have a look tomorrow!

Nope. Too old, only 256 MB Ram and much too expensive (here in TH) for this toy.

I saw offers in Germany, for about 169 Euro = ~7000 Baht.

But ok, Powerbuy is an expensive store, I know.

Tomorrow I have an appointment in BKK, and if I have a little bit spare time, I will check the tablets in Zeer Rangsit.

If not....ok, I will wait until my next trip home, before I buy overpriced oldies.

Off topic: In the meantime, I reactivated my old Dell 900MhZ 12" Laptop, put a Puppy Linux on it, Teamviever + VLC and it fits my needs, .....more or less....wai.gif

It's a bit smaller (8 inch) than your spec but I can 100% recomend the G-net Gpad Extreme. Shop around and you can get it for 4500 baht. I use mine mainly for reading and watching movies and have no problems or criticisms at all

With the new release of the Apple iPad 3, even though it's not called that, and the corresponding price reduction on the IPad 2s by Apple, there's a lot of comment this week that that's going to put pressure on Android tablet manufacturers to either up their specs and/or reduce their prices on their currently lower spec'd units.

There's also the current transition from older Gingerbread and Honeycomb OS Android tablets to the more recent Ice Cream Sandwich OS specifically tailored for tablets. I've been looking a lot at tablets lately, and came close a couple of times. But things seem to be very much in flux right now, and so I've kind of decided to wait until things sort out a bit, particularly as regard ICS making greater inroads into the units currently being sold.

^ Apple seems to have managed the channel inventory to avoid any brand-harming huge discounting on remaining iPad2's. I think Best Buy only dropped the price by $50, and there may not be that many units left in the retail channels? Now the resale market for used iPad2s is obviously affected.

The, essentially third generation of Android Tablets, have been announced but are not yet available, and they are really not that much of a leap, if any, in HW performance. The 2nd generation still have too much HW for the available SW anyway. For bleeders, I guess we are still looking for that Tab 11.6 which will smoke the iPad3, maybe an announcement any minute now?

Anyway, the second generation (dual-core, 1 Ghz) generation tablets like the Samsung Tabs may hold their price points until the channel gets filled with Tab2's? Tab1's, with Android 3.x (Honeycomb) are, in my experience, really great. I only hope 4.0/ICS is at least as good on a tablet? Samsung is supposed to be rolling out 4.0 for their Tab 1's this month. Even if you wait months to buy the unit it will still come with 3.1; the user will have to upgrade.

I am considering holding off for a Tab2 as the 3G version is supposed to be capable of handling traditional GSM voice calls, which would be a huge plus, IMO. But I may also jump on a Tab 1 10.1/WiFi only if the price point comes down to say 11,000.

FWIW, I am running Android 4.0.3 on a nearly 2 year old Samsung Galaxy S variant (1 Ghz/single core) and it is performing well.

Loma, from what I was reading and hearing, Apple cut the list price on their base iPad 2 by $100 to coincide with the iPad 3 launch.... down to $399 I believe... And I was already reading about some retailers in the U.S. already selling it lower for around $350 for in-store pickup (not online ordering). With predictions that similar pricing trends will follow.

On the $100 price cut for the iPad 2

http://dealnews.com/...ing/556264.html

and

On how the iPad 2 price cut likely will influence the Android tablet market

http://dealnews.com/...Go-/556269.html

Also, from what I was hearing, Apple isn't necessarily planning on discontinuing the iPad 2 at least for the immediate future, but rather keeping it as a lower price point offering to compete with the lower priced Android tablets. In other words, it's not like they're just going to be selling out current iPad 2 stock and then done with that model.

From the various reporting I caught on the subject, Apple didn't address that subject explicitly in its announcement. But what I recited above seems to be the general feeling among the Apple following media folks.

As for the iPad 2 vs. 3, the main difference in hardware with the newer model from what I can gather in the higher resolution retina type display, a 9.7" 2048 x 1536 display ...... significantly higher than the I2 and most or all of what's out there in the Android tablet marketplace. Along with 4G LTE, which I guess is relevant for some U.S. areas, but irrelevant for Thailand.

BTW, my comments on the market pricing and competitive dynamics in my prior post above were in relation to the U.S. market and retailers there... I wouldn't dare to venture a guess on the extent to which those kinds of competitive forces would play in Thailand's less competitive marketplace.

Well, the specs seem to be ok, for a device in this price range..

Operating system (OS, CPU).

Operating System: Android version 2.3 Gingerbread.

Processor: (a).

- Speed: 1.2 GHz.

Memory 8 GB (Built).

- 1GB ROM.

- 512GB RAM.

Memory cards microSD - up to 32 GB

Where do you bought it?

I will start looking in Tukcom.

Yes, it seems like the iPad2/16GB/WiFi price was dropped from $499 to $399, Best Buy, Walmart and the Apple Store show the $399 price. I was relying on an article I read a few days which said (incorrectly) that the price drop may be only $50 on this base unit, and that there was not too much product in the channel. I guess the iPad3 will be available next Friday, March 16, in the U.S.

Hmm, I wasn't able to find this "G-net Gpad Extreme." in Tukcom Pattaya.

Loads of Galaxy's and Ipad's, but this device = "mei mee"

Any ideas where to look in Pattaya?
