Newsweek Names PM One of World's 150 Fearless Women

BANGKOK: -- Newsweek’s third annual list of 150 fearless women who shake the world includes Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

To commemorate the International Women's Day, Newsweek magazine released its list of 150 Fearless Women.

The magazine ranks 150 distinguished women, who are government and country leaders, protest activists in the city and remote villages, those who support education, fight corruption, harness new technologies, and break down old prejudices to upgrade the local standard of living and human rights.

Among those on the list was Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

Thailand's first female prime minister won a landslide election in August with a campaign promising to eradicate poverty by boosting the minimum wage, building high-speed trains, and giving free computers to every student.

Yingluck Shinawatra, the little sister of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, had no political experience before assuming office, but inspired hope of reconciliation in the country torn apart by two years of violent political protests.

She got started right away: just one month before she took office, Thailand was beseiged by floods, and a quick-thinking Shinawatra immediately set up relief operations and long-term prevention measures.

She is no Margaret Thatcher. Now that was a tough woman. Not really people friendly though.

I still don't see how Ying Luck ever got nominated in her party. You have to be a MP before being named for head of party. How did they swing that?

She is a 3 in 1. Trinity. Fearless, beautiful & smart all in one.

Isn't she lovely ...

Isn't she wonderful ...

Isn't she precious ...

Big Bro should hire Stevie Wonder to write her theme song!

How fearless would she be if you take away her brother’s backing. And where she goes? Oh yeah Dubai

Someone at Newsweek needs a new thesaurus. Fearless is not a synonym for criminally imcompetent. Hell, she's not even in the top three fearless women in her own family.

If she really is fearless, why haven't we ever seen her in an in-depth interview (not just a 5-minute one in which she can recite some key words) or debate?

Just very recently I watched Malaysia's Anwar Ibrahim participate in a long interview on Thai PBS which covered many topics, including controversies relating to the multiple charges of sodomy against him. He did a good job in answering the questions and explaining his points of view.

Did he had sex with another man (men)?

Please tell me that last bit wasn't directly taken from the Newsweek caption (I'm sure there weren't more than a few words on Yingluck, not least because Newsweek and Time magazines are like the comic books of news magazines).

From the Anwar Ibrahim Wikipedia page:

In 1999, he was sentenced to six years in prison for corruption, and in 2000, to another nine years for sodomy. In 2004, the Federal Court reversed the second conviction and he was released. In July 2008, he was arrested over allegations he sodomised one of his male aides, but was acquitted of the charge in January 2012.

I don't know whether he really did or not, but the important thing to note is that he had enough courage to face the media and courts, instead of shying away like Yingluck does or running away to another country like Thaksin has done.

Was this before or after she burst into tears, denied all knowlege and went shopping for a new pair of Burberry boots ?

This was about what I was thinking, AND, exactly what has she accomplished as of yet? Zip, nada, zilch. As far as I know, all her govt. has done is talk, and not even talking a good game either.

Thatcher was a witch... maybe that's how they swung it!

Newsweek should also do a story about how she fought-off a tiger barehanded when she was just 7. rolleyes.gif

How does riding your brother's coattails into office get you the fearless moniker? During the floods she was useless. What has she done other than get elected?

Nah, that was Kim Jong Il, after a round of golf. ;-)
