DLT to launch free car checkup before Songkran holiday

BANGKOK, 10 March 2012 (NNT) - The Department of Land Transport (DLT) will launch a free car checkup campaign on Monday as part of its bid to help prevent road accidents during the upcoming Songkran holiday.

This year, the campaign will be joined by more than 2,000 private agencies to offer free car checkup from March 12 to April 12. Car owners can get the service at any of the places showing the signs or posters issued by the DLT.

In addition, vocational students will be on hand at more than 500 spots on both main and subsidiary roads to offer repair service between March 21 and April 10.

Passenger safety centers and rest areas will also be set up at all inter-provincial bus terminals between April 1-17 to ensure that both passengers and drivers are safe and properly taken care of.

Second tourist in Bangkok hotel blaze dies

BANGKOK, March 10, 2012 (AFP) - A second Russian has died after being caught in a fire at a major tourist hotel in Bangkok, which injured about 20 others in a popular visitor district, hospital staff and officials said Saturday.

The blaze broke out in a function room at the 221-room Grand Park Avenue Hotel off the Sukhumvit Road in the Thai capital on Thursday evening, and a female tourist died of suffocation the following day.

A male tourist, who was taken into intensive care, died early Saturday, according to a senior nurse at the Kluay Nam Thai hospital.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration released a statement saying both of the deceased were Russian, while most of the wounded had already been discharged.

Four Thai workers injured from fighting in Israel

Four Thai workers in Israel were injured by rockets fired from Gaza strip late last night.

They were in En Habsor city, about 100 km from capital of Tel Aviv and near Gaza Strip.
