Celebrations mark Elephant Day

The Nation

30177877-01_big.jpg

AYUTTHAYA: -- To mark National Thai Elephant Day yesterday, the owner of an elephant kraal in Ayutthaya urged the government to seriously tackle elephantrelated issues, while Lampang and Chiang Rai hosted meritmaking rituals. Thailand has about 5,000 elephants left.

Ayutthaya kraal owner Laithongrien Meepan also took four elephants - two dressed as war elephants and two painted like pandas - to the City Hall, bearing signs reading: "Today we're beggars. In the past we served in battles to restore the nation."

In Lampang's Hang Chat district, Thai Elephant Conservation Centre officials, members of the public and 30 elephants attended the morning alms offering to nine monks, followed by elephantrelated rituals, a ceremony to confer awards on outstanding mahouts, photographtaking and a feast for the elephants.

In Chiang Rai's Muang district, Kariang Ruammit Ville, the province's only elephantraising village, held a ritual to ask for blessings from 32 elephants and their mahouts, attended by Thai and foreign tourists. It was followed by a feast of fruit for the elephants. The village's elephant camp, offering elephant riding services, was closed for the day.

Three shot dead in Ayutthaya

The Nation

AYUTTHAYA: -- Gunmen in a pickup truck opened fire on a group of motorcycleriding teenagers and young adults in Ayutthaya's Uthai district yesterday morning, leaving three people dead, including the son of Han Ta Pao Tambon Administrative Organisation (TAO)'s president.

Following the shooting on Rojana Road at 4.30am, police found the bodies of the TAO president's son, Nanthapol Hongthong, 20, who was just married on March 10, and his friend Chanachai Yoothes, 18, near a petrol station. Another friend, aged 15, was pronounced dead at a local hospital and found to be carrying 10 "ya ba" tablets, while another friend aged 15 was seriously injured.

Chanachai's relative Chanachol Wangmeechop, 21, said they were riding motorcycles in a group from a night club to their homes in Wang Noi district when a bronze Nissan Navara pickup truck with Sakura flower stickers came up from behind and a person in the truck opened fire on them.

Police suspected the attack stemmed from a dispute with other youngsters or a dispute over an illegal business.

Suspended jail term for rogue monk

The Nation

PETCHABUN: -- Phetchabun's Lom Sak Court yesterday read an Appeals Court decision sentencing Phra Kasem Ajinasilo of Nam Nao district's Wat Sam Yaek monastery to a suspended twoyear jail term and a Bt20,000 fine for tarnishing Buddhism.

In November 2008, the Phetchabun Buddhism Office filed a lawsuit against Phra Kasem, whose civilian name is Duangphaeng Duanmak. It accused him of stepping on the base of a Buddha statue, slapping the statue's face and putting a sign on the brass statue urging people not to worship it because it wasn't Lord Buddha. The lower court dismissed the case on March 17, 2009.

Phra Kasem appeared in a YouTube clip and a TV news report behaving in an allegedly inappropriate manner, leading the Royal Forestry Department to probe his monastery's use of forestland. The department decided not to let him use the location any longer, while the Sangha of Udon Thani, where the monk was originally ordained, last October ordered him to leave the monkhood. Phra Kasem, however, continued to practice as a monk.
