Hey guys, I'm a huge fan of beer. What guy isn't right? Thailand seems to have the standard Chang, leo, singha and heineken all over the place. I was wondering If Chiang Mai has any local breweries or beer gardens? Nothing like a good ol' craft beer on a hot Thai day :)

You mean like a micro brewery, might be lucky, I thought Thailands climate might make it hard and the laws relating to making alcahol might make it prohibitive.

I used to smile when ever I used to see a motocy with a package wrapped in newspaper leave the house across from ours in rural Uttaradit, they were making Lao Khao out the back and used to package it up in plastic bag and wrap it in newspaper. dodgy as.

I used to go here a lot but the standard of the beer went down, I think mainly as no-one was using the place and the stuff sat in the pumps for too long, It looks like they have done a lot of work on the place now so I may have to have another go at it.

I'd be a little bit worried about where the (used) contnts of the beer bath end up....

I've been to the German Brewery a couple of times as well. As one poster said, the quality of the craft beers has deteriorated over time. Last visit there was no owner there that I could see, only a couple of Thai bar staff. They had trouble getting the beer to pour right as they were pouring into a jug and getting about 80% head then pouring the jug into the serving glasses. Consequently the beer came to the table with little carbonation (great I guess if your a pommie), next to no head retention and slightly warm. We tried a few different beers - all were the same. And the prices weren't cheap either. I was pretty disappointed with the whole experience. I don't mind paying premium if its a good drop but not on this occasion. Hopefully they will pick their act up...........

We used to have the Dunkel from the microbrewery at The Olde Bell, but the guy was unable to service the beer properly and we gave up. O'Malley's still have it. We switched to Kilkenny, which despite problems with stock at the distributors , is a better bet, as at least the quality is consistent. It's proving very popular.

Cold Beer, Warm Atmosphere

Similar experience but I didn't see them pour it. Poor value, generally disappointing.

well that's no good!! a good poor is essential! and O'malleys sounds good. My whole family is from Ireland, so glad to hear that there is a Irish pub in CM ;)

So in summary, Chiang Mai has one German microbrewery that isn't very good, and some bars with imported beer on tap. Not exactly paradise for microbrewery fans.

It certainly isn't. Stay here long enough and you'll forget what hops taste like.

Oh, that's why so many people like Beer Lao.

well... even better!! belgium beer is amazing :) and after reading the last few posts... definitely made me feel better about my choice to move to Chiang mai... not that there is anything wrong with Singha of course.. but its not exactly a Trappist ale, or a nice stout... you know... the type of beer that you sit back and sip and enjoy it for what it is ;) thats what im looking for... might be hard to find :P

Can't agree with that at all, but if it keeps you happy it can't be a bad thing.

Another bright spot is that almost the full lines of Weihenstephaner and Paulaner beers are available in supermarkets and select restaurants and bars. But overall, there just isn't much variety here. After you've tried everything that Tops, Rimping, and the No 1 sell you're not going to discover a lot of new brews.

can anybody tell me anything about the Red Lion pub? they have an ok selection... they have Hoegarrden which is great to see!!! and Leffe :D both excellent

Paulaner is one of favourites... glad to know that there is at least some selection in CM..

N.C

Generally it's fresh stock too. In some other countries, most notably in the US, Paulaner seems to have a supply chain problem and often when you buy their beer it's past it's "drink by" date. Not here though.
