I took my USB wireless broadband dongles to Malaysia, bought a Hotlink (Maxis) SIM and installed it in the dongle(s) and plugged it in to the laptop. The Thai dongle software is detected and claims to connect but of course it doesn't. My guess is that I need some software for the dongle to recognize Maxis as the network.

Any ideas?

Can you share any details? It sounds like you have one or more USB air-cards? Can you share the brand/model? Any details about which provider(s) you've used in Thailand?

Which Maxis SIM did you buy? Did you add money? Did you subscribe to some sort of data plan?

Did you set up a new profile or connection for Maxis/Hotlink?

It seems like you should be able to get 2G: GSM Data - GPRS/EDGE, or if your air-card supports 2100 Mhz, 3G.

Edit: try this Maxis FAQ doc Maxis 3g internet faq_Prepaid.pdf

Last year, i used digi sim and was able to order service using their USSD menu. I think they had plans as cheap as 3 riggit/day (50MB fair use) auto-renew or 15 riggit/week (250 MB fair use) auto-renew. I think they also advertised that they guaranteed that if you used data without a plan that they capped the max spending to 8 or 9 riggit/day and then you were auto-given unlimited data for that day. Wow, how progressive I thought; just about everywhere else the only thing "guaranteed" is that you will be charged by the minute/MB until you have insufficient balance hit-the-fan.gif .

i tethered with portable hotspot on samsung galaxy ace (900/2100mhz 3g). I think all the malaysian 3g is 2100mhz. The digi customer service pushed the correct apn settings directly to the phone, and calling digi from their sim cards is free. In the case of an aircard, you need the correct APN settings to type in manually or I think digi has their own connection software as I'm sure maxis does also. The connection software is designed to be one-size-fits-many devices and would have their APN settings pre-installed. Because you have a TrueMove or whatever modem, windows or mac default installation for that modem is to launch the default connection software (TrueMove connect in this case). You would just ignore or close out of this and launch Maxis' connection software and connect with this software instead. But if you have their APN settings......

OR

from within TrueMove/AIS/DTAC connection software, you go to the options menu (usually Tools > Options),

and then Create a new profile (Under Profile Management). Call it "Maxis 3G Malaysia" input the APN settings as shown on Maxis website or what Maxis tells you.

best to get it from maxis website or representative.....I googled a few sites and this is what I came up with for maxis 3g prepaid:

APN name: bbnet

Access number: *99#

Username: Maxis

Password: wap

post-109486-0-54094800-1332077958_thumb.

Save the profile, then return to the connection main screen, select the "Maxis 3G Malaysia" profile, and connect to it.

If it works ok, you can go back to the profile management screen and make this connection profile "default" so it is pre-selected everytime your connection software launches.

Look what I found while doing some searching:

http://www.maxis.com...mf600_tip1a.asp

Which reiterates some of the stuff I've been saying. In fact, I was already finished typing up this post when I saw that pdf on a last minute search. It explains it all.

Call their customer service for more info on the APN settings if it does not work. I think you were trying to connect with a Thai carrier APN settings, which obviously would not work.

One more thing....if you have problems with modem switching between 2G and 3G, make sure that the modem radio is set to receive 2100mhz 3G only. This is found in the "network" part of the settings, where you can set the aircard to only allow 3g connections. For truemove in Thailand, it would be WCDMA850

The worst case senario would be having to manually connect using windows/mac built in connection utilities. As long as you have the standard USB driver for the device for the operating system, you can do it. Here is a screenshot of a mac example in Network Preferences. This is example for TrueMove H:

I hope this wasn't too complicated for you. It really only takes a minute or two to test each option. The APN settings are the most important, and downloading maxis (or carrier-specific) connection software is probably the most straight-forward for non-techies. Personally I don't like too much unnecessary software on my pc, but you can always uninstall your Thai carrier connection software, install Malaysian carrier connection software and then reverse this when you come back to Thailand.

And I hope Maxis got rid of all those money requirements 300 riggit deposit + 100 riggit no contract fee? Or maybe that is for postpaid service only.

Thanks 4evermaat for the detailed instructions. I tried everything, the resort IT guy tried everything and neither of us could get any data download from the Maxis network using either an AIS or True dongles. The local Hotlink (Maxis) shops were pretty useless too.

We were at Rebak island resort off Langkawi. The wireless could find and connect to the network but would not download any data, it downloaded Maxis messages though.

A pal of mine with a Celcom dongle had no trouble. I'm back in Pattaya now.
