I've been on Retirement Extensions for a few years and have forgotten the rules with the normal 30 day stamp.

Have a friend who needs some extra days on his initial 30 day stamp.

Can he just do a crossing into Laos or Cambodia and on return receive another 30 days?

I am in the same boat, I don't go back to work offshore until 3 days after my 30 days is up. I am based in Bangkok, where do I go for immigration (airport??) to get the extension and is there a limit on how many days before the 30 days runs out that I can apply for the extension?

It is not an extension but a disapproval of an extension request so you need to go within seven days of exit as that is the time allowed from date you apply until you must leave. It is not an official extension of stay. You would have to do at Chiang Watanna immigration office if in Bangkok.

I went there today...took 45 mins and cost 1900b. Beats doing a border run if you only need a few extra days.

Same here, I required exactly 7 days, and didn't want to leave it until the last day to try for it.

I went in a week earlier, politely explained the situation, and they give me a 7 day extension from date of expiry... very helpfull.

I believe that, as in all walks of life, a polite and patient attitude goes a long way in these situations.
