Need Companion For Motorcycle Trip

ugnich

Recommended Posts

In May-June I wanna go by motorcycle to the south of Thailand, after - several months in Malaysia, Indonesia. I don't have a concretely routes and I depend only on visas. I will go alone on my Kawasaki Ninja 150. Anybody wants to join me on your own motorcycle?

About me: girl, 27 y.o., positive, communicable, strong-willed. In good physical shape and with some motorcycle knowledge. English is not my native language. Last six months I live in Thailand, right now - in Hua Hin.

I personally wouldn't advise such a trip for a young girl like yourself. South of Thailand, going into North of Malaysia etc - a lot of cowboy towns enroute and personal safety could be a major concern. Why not join a MC first and go riding around Thailand in a group?

Hi I am rying to figure out how to do trips on bikes there myself. I got a Harley last July but notice that you can't run on the tollways which is how I know how to get around. Did you get maps showing what roads are permissible to ride on or use GPS? I would like to make some runs this year but will have to figure out the road situation first. I say go for it. You seem to know what you want to do just have your what if plan made out so you know what to do in case of break downs and such. It is better to ride with some one else or a group but you can have a good ride by your self too. It always seems to me that all my troubles seem so much smaller when I am on the road with the throttle twisted back! Have fun.

Way back when, I used to make the Northern loop (Chiang Mai up and around and back to CM)...great roads, beautiful scenery. Many, many perfect moments a'la Spalding Gray. If only I had the time. Carry a cell/mobile and a smile and you can't go wrong. I think solo rides are more spiritual.

Have a great time!

Even if joining a MC club was as easy as you think, most of them have cc restrictions for this reason and cannot join unless you have 400cc and up.

Most MC's also require some sort of commitment so you would need to be a "local" as well.

in the Thai clubs it's not so difficult AND there are a huge amount of scooter and classic bike clubs here in Thailand they tend to be really mellow and do huge mileage (even on ancient C70's)

I would stronly NOT reccomend this on a 150cc unless you want to end up living in some motorcycle mechanic's garage

people have went around the world on honda dreams 100c and vintage vespas etc

i dont think a ninja 150cc would be incapable of it but certaintly a ninja 250 or ninja 650 would be better

a 150cc with 1 girl and a backpack on it could probably cruise at 120kmph for ever with regular maintance

but in S.E.A the roads will stop you getting touring speeds before your bike will usually

I just got myself a brand spanking new PCX yesterday and am eager to go riding. Does anyone know of any MC's (preferably English speaking) in / around Lat Krabang / Ratchatewa area? If not, any casual riders just want to meet up for rides to nowhere in particular? For what it's worth, I used to ride a fair bit in Aussie in the early 80's but have not done any riding since so high speeds and overly difficult bits are not my cup of tea for now till I get my eye back in.

I realize there are clubs with no cc restrictions also however I only say that "most' clubs that do long distance rides have some restrictions and even the clubs with the "big bikes" have someone with a truck that follows in most cases. (spare parts, emergency items etc.)

I think the OP made a very wise decision posting here first looking for companions to ride "with" because it is just not safe on the roads she has mentioned not even for people in cars alone let alone her being female and alone.

I have done all of those rides (in Thailand) she is talking about but with friends and even then when we stopped in the hills for r&r there were vehicles stopping not far off eye-balling us all. Easy takings for a person that needs a new bike trust me.

Sure it "can" be done on a 150cc but again I would stronly reccomend her NOT doing it alone and even with a group I reccomend she/they get a GPS from the tourist police and let them know of your venture. It's the smart thing to do.

Would it be right to say that all toll roads are off limits to motorbikes which means that all other roads are permissible?

no ,not exactly

many roads which are not tollways are prohibited also

usualy theres a good (high speed) lanes in the middle

and a crappy frontage road going along side it for people with slow vehicles ,people who are stopping to use gas stations or coming on or off the high speed road

its not fair but no matter if your riding a hayabusa turbo ,your still supposed to be in the "slow" frontage road

saying that ,you can get into the middle roads but expect a fine if they can catch you

Hello ugnich ... you would do well to ignore the paranoid ramblings evident in this thread.

It is always nice to have a riding companion but you dont need one.

You have everything you need for a safe and successful journey.

Take your time, and the backroads,

Many smiles await you.

I disagree with the idea that a smaller bike is more prone to breakdown, if anything it's the other way around.

More importantly any backwater mechanic can fix and have spare parts for the small buggers,

while i would have to transport the big bike back to pattaya and have my mechanic order the mailfunctioning part from singhapore.

The practical reason of bike gangs 'rule' of minimum 400/600 cc is the tempo, especially acceleration,

the real reason is the 'image' of a badarse biker

I think that has to be the worst advice one could give to a single girl riding alone in another country where she doesn't speak the language:

"Take the backroads" ??????????

Do yourself, the police, hospitals and the rest of us a favour and do NOT take this advice. Stick to the MAIN roads if you must and never drive past dark alone.

You should not give this type of advice especially if you have never traveled the roads she speaks of yourself. Like I say I have many times but with other people.

Might also want to start reading the news about the south and keep in mind that in the Muslim areas a single girl on a bike would be heavily frowen upon.

PS: I would be willing to bet my life he has already sent her a pm. lmao

ugnich,

You sound like my riding buddy back in Texas. She had her own HD and I had a Kawasaki Vulcan. We used to head out for some great rides. She is coming to visit the summer of 2013 and we are going to do the Thailand, Lao, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand loop.

Let me know if you don't find anyone for the trip. I might go ahead and spring for the Versys and hit the road (though I really do want another Vulcan).

I already have an experience, how to ride alone in Thailand, not on the main road and in dark. Not on motorbike, but on bicycle: almost 200 km from Bangkok to Cha-am in one day. :)

I must say that being female you must consider the dangers. You may well be fine, but if you aren't. It doesn't bear thinking about.

If you get no other offers I would consider Genericnic's offer(unless he's an axe murderer) though a 150 will struggle to keep up with a 650 Versys.

We're riding down to Malaysia next week for a week long tour- you'd be welcome to join us but I don't think a 150 would be able to keep up as we're going to go at a pretty brisk pace, especially the Bangkok-Sadao leg which we plan to do in a day...

I think it's fantastic you've got the guts to ride in Thailand alone. Sure there are risks, but I trust you're intelligent enough to have thought about that already.

Hope you'll ignore the fear-mongers and have a great trip!

Keep us posted on this thread- when it comes time for the ride I might join you for part of it.

Happy Trails!

Tony

Ugnich,

I wish you good luck. Like BigbikeBKK, if you are strong willed and have the motorcycle skill, do not listen to those who say you cannot do it. It is a good idea to see if someone wants to ride with you...it may be boring all alone. :) If I can make another suggestion--if you don't want to ride all the way down, you could put your motorcycle on a train, and take the train down further South, then take your bike and ride all the way down. This is only made as a suggestion for an additional option, if you want to ride all the way down GO FOR IT. :)

No reason not to take the trip.

There are currently some people ridding Tuk-Tuks through Sumatra so you can find them and follow their experience.

Your Kawa 150 was available in Indonesia so no worries about repairs but you probably won't need any as they are a reliable bike. I had a Honda 150 sama sama.

The ferry from Penang to Medan (Belawan) will take your bike.

Be sure to check out Captain Slash's travels, in south Thailand and north Malaysia, for good recommendations of routes and accommodation. Don't rush your trip, take your time, Hua Hin to Denpasar in 2 months (for example) would be a heck of a lot of (fun) work. Here's another link to a trip report riding the Malay Peninsula done riding a 110 cc Kawasaki.
