Thailand gave away free drugs for years. The opium dens were in every community. Opium was given away for free. People could go to the opium den and smoke till they died. So please tell me looking at where Thailand is now did it do them any good?

Samlor drivers used to be found dead in the samlors in front of the opium dens. When drugs were free people suffered from abuse and neglect. They used the free drugs to hid hunger pains and injuries.People literally starved to death on the doorways of the opium dens.

TV members who say drugs should be legalized or drug dealers should have more protection show do a little history research and see what life was like in Thailand when it was a drug culture nation. If you think a life is cheap here now do your homework and see that it had far less value when drugs were readily available, and free.

Worse is coming. Look to Germany, 30s.

That's a bit of a stretch but there is something to the way some governments use brutal authoritarian methods to desensitize their populations and prepare them for even worse. This kind of development in Thai society, reminiscent of the Thaksin policies, is not encouraging.

Don't need to go back to the 30's, just to America under Dubbleya Bush.

And opium was perfectly legal in the UK as well, and easily obtainable over the counter.

And in pretty much every nation in the world. What's your point?

An the Opium wars were what? In case you forgot, when China tried to close the opium dens and stop the exploitation of its people, the British sent warships to force the Chinese to allow the continued sale of opium. It's how England obtained Hong Kong. The century of humiliation as the Chinese reference it, followed with unfair treaties imposed by France and the USA. Somewhat ironic that the biggest anti drug nation now was the one forcing drugs on "chinamen" as they were derisively called in diplomatic dispatches.

The bleating of foreigners about how the Thais should legalize drugs mirrors the same arguments that foreigners previously gave prior to the opium wars. Some things don't change including the condescending colonial attitudes of some foreigners. If you want drugs, advocate for it in your country and don't try and force the scourge on others. What's next, TVFers organizing an invasion force to ensure that Yaba can be sold outside of schools, so that children can be addicted at an earlier age and then forced to prostitute themselves to depraved foreigners in order to support their drug habits? Better yet, the populace can be doped up so as to be less uppity when bwana farang comes to town. Thailand can learn from the mistakes the Chinese made, and not back down.

Wheeew! You really seem to be on a roll the last few days, you need to relax.

The way I read the whole thing is that SOME people are suggesting that legalizing drugs would be a way to reduce the massive amounts of crime that now takes place in order that addicts can fund their habit. That is a far cry from what you suggest as being the desire to return to colonial force feeding of drugs to subdue the population.

Drug related crime is on the up all over the world as prices soar, and the only way to fund that habit is to take to the streets as a prostitute, or mug, murder and steal. It is blatantly clear that the drug war is being lost as the amount of resources required just to stop the drug traffic let alone fight and investigate crime is beyond the means of almost any government. Add to that, that it becomes clear that top level influential position holders seem to be implicated or involved in the drug trafficking process then the chances of effectively fighting it are minimal. As a last resort SOME people are saying legalize it in a desperate bid to find an effective solution to the crime problem that is so closely associated with the drug trade. It has been proved that legalizing the drug trade does not increase usage, because it lacks scarcity it lacks value. Medical assistance is often giving, ensuring users get access to needles etc, therebye cutting down on hepatitis and HIV/Aids, another massive drain on a countries resources.

Your rant concerning selling drugs to school children in some bid to start under age prostitution rackets is so off the mark and out of order it discredits you. It is legal to purchase whiskey in Thailand, do you see people stood outside school selling whiskey to kids to turn them into alcoholic under age prostitutes? Your rant is just that ....a rant!

In the meantime, those that wish to take drugs continue to do so, when you catch one drug trafficker there are another 100 willing to take the risk to receive payments in a poverty stricken society. Instead of ranting nonsensically why not put your efforts into suggesting a way to solve the problem, because at the moment the problem is increasing not diminishing and it needs cutting at the roots, not pruning on the branches.
