SEOUL, March 27 -- Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Tuesday joined the leaders of more than 50 nations attending the 2012 Seoul Nuclear Summit which is focusing on achieving more specific actions to prevent nuclear terrorism and to ensure atomic safety.

The summit, being held at Seoul’s Convention and Exhibition Center (COEX), is the second of its kind since the inaugural gathering in Washington DC two years ago, then hosted by US President Barack Obama.

During the meeting, the Thai premier is expected to suggest establishing a nuclear monitoring network in the Southeast Asian region and establishment of a Center of Excellence to investigate nuclear traces.

The Center could help expand capability to scientifically investigate and track transnational smuggling of nuclear weapons.

The discussion among the world leaders could boost cooperation for more effective nuclear terrorism prevention.

The Seoul summit is expected to serve as a "stepping stone" to translate the political will generated at the Washington summit into action, while laying a cornerstone for attaining key nuclear security goals in the mid- and long-term, a senior Seoul official with information on the summit was quoted by local media as saying on Tuesday.

The 47 world leaders agreed at the previous summit that nuclear terrorism is a top global security challenge and that strong nuclear material security measures are the most effective way to prevent it.

A "Seoul Communique" will be announced at the end of the summit.

The Netherlands has agreed to host the third Nuclear Security Summit in 2014.

Ms Yingluck is scheduled to attend a Plenary Session to discuss the topic, “National Measures and International Cooperation to Enhance Nuclear Security” followed by a working lunch among the leaders. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the United Nations will lead a discussion on “Synergy between Nuclear Security and Nuclear Security.”

Afterward Ms Yingluck will join a dinner reception hosted by South Korean President Lee-Myung-bak and the first lady to honour the leaders attending the conference.

The premier departs Seoul Tuesday night, arriving in Thailand Wednesday at 2.55am. (MCOT online news)

I recall a similar Arisaman photo... but she looked more relaxed in it and Arisaman was much more attentive than President Lee Myung-bak.

Wot a babe!

I was wondering why she was there until I saw the "working lunch." As Thailand has no nuclear facilities AFAIK, and claims the that it has no terrorists let alone the nuclear type, I still don't see the necessity. The guy shaking her hand seems similarly perplexed.

I don't suppose she got a chance to drop in to parliament between flights.

During the meeting, the Thai premier is expected to suggest establishing a nuclear monitoring network in the Southeast Asian region

I was unaware of her apparently notable knowledge on this subject matter.

and establishment of a Center of Excellence to investigate nuclear traces.

When's the ground-breaking on the construction of the new hub of Center of Excellence in Bangkok?

Ms Yingluck is scheduled to attend a Plenary Session to discuss the topic, “National Measures and International Cooperation to Enhance Nuclear Security”

With her vast experience and in depth knowledge of Nuclear Security issues I'm sure that she will have some very timely and important suggestions that could revolutionize the entire global IAEA organization.

Chalerm must be keeping secrets from us. Had no idea he was working on preventing nuclear threats.

As Thailand has no nuclear facilities AFAIK, and claims the that it has no terrorists let alone the nuclear type, I still don't see the necessity.

Thailand has operated a nuclear research reactor since the 1960s, and is discussing building a full size nuclear power plant, so it's understandable why they would attend. They are also neighbors with Burma, who has been suspected of having a nuclear weapons program

That research reactor is only 2KW. Less powerful than my oven.

Somehow I'd think a CoE on Investigating Nuclear Traces could be located in Singapore where you're more likely to find highly educated and qualified personel. Like people less likely to drain a solution checked via the sink and such things. IMHO.

As for the parrot flying to South Korea, are we sure it wasn't a swallow and maybe carrying a coconut?

Shame on you for making such a sensible comment; do you not know the purpose of this thread is for Farangs to sneer at the Thai Prime Minister?

Sparebox informs me the test reactor is 2kW capacity. To put that in perspective for the uninformed, I can generate 1kW on an exercise bicycle, though not for long. Not an expert, but I would estimate the radioactives involved to just exceed SFA.

As for Myanmar having a "suspected" nuclear weapons program - I have started building a bomb shelter under my house.

Do you have an answer for my question - did the PM manage a visit to parliament, or is she too busy gadflying around and attending meetings?

My comment wasn't meant to try to defend the PM.

Just pointing out that Thailand has a nuclear reactor, albeit a small research one, and is planning on building a full size nuclear power plant, so it makes sense that someone (not necessarily her) should be there from Thailand. As for Myanmar, they actually ARE building a nuclear reactor with Russian help, so it's not out of the realm of possibility that they would seek to build a weapon with it, which would be of concern to Thailand and every country in the region

why can't your comment have been meant to defend the pm being there?

when world leaders from countries were attending the event and you state that someone from thailand shoud be there.

are you really that biased that you can't even be seen to say that you think she was right to attend.. unbelievable.
