Does anyone know of a Goverment hospital that will give you a price for treatment or surgery before going a head with it .I know they do treat expats having been in one of the hospitals before . i need more surgery but when i go back and ask them to give me a price my surgeon says he don't know because it's not a private Hospital but he is willing to operate on me . i don't want to wake up with a nasty surprise like i did before ..... any suggestions please would be most help full .

All I can say about that is if I needed surgery I would NOT go to a government hospital in Thailand. All of the decent surgens work for private hospitals, clinics which leaves the less experienced one working in Government hospitals.

I think the reason they won't quote you is because they are not sure how the surgery will go and the after stay/treatment where as a private hospital surgen has done hundreds of the same proceedures and knows the cost, medicine etc.

For instance going to Bangklamung Hospital for surgery is like going to a vet for a heart transplant.

PS: I guess this depends what you consider Surgery? If it's having a wart removed or a simple proceedure or a major surgery?

Sorry but this information is simply wrong. Many of the surgeons and doctors who work at BPH (as an example) also hold clinics in the government hospital such as the one in Sattahip. I know of one example where a patient who could not afford the treatment at BHP was told by the surgeon to go see him at Queen Sirikitat Sattahip.

I also had a friend who had keyhole surgery at Queen Sirikit to fix a hernia was charged all of B16,000 and he had no complaints whatsoever.

One of the best hospitals in Thailand is Chulalongkorn in Bangkok and it is a public hospital.

i think that you will find that all surgeons once qualified have to do x amount of years in a Government hospital before they can go private other wise they would all be running of to make big bucks .After having major surgery in a government hospital and being checked in the UK to say everything they done was fine i have no complaints all i need to know is about there pricing ..

The problem with Government hospitals is that they have specific times when the doctor can operate using Government times and when he can operate privately, thus getting more money.

I had a reversal, if done in normal times it would have been expensive, but I had it done in the time allocated for Government, and was happy to get a bill of under 6,000 (six thousand) baht, and not more than 20,000.

I had mine done at Chula in Bangkok.

I do agree that if you must, Queen Sirikitat Sattahip is probably the best bet near Pattaya.

I recently spent 8 days there and had every blood test you can think of, CAT scan, MRT etc. and when I left the bill was 7000 baht. Very Cheap but I still say it's not easy to get a pre-quote from a Government hospital.

Like I said earlier it depends what surgery the OP needs. I would not go to banglamung for instance for heart surgery.

Again getting a pre-quote would depend on the surgery which would define what complications they might run into etc. I have been in and out of both private and government hospitals here now for 11 years and have yet to get an actual quote. I have had "around" quotes but never a confirmed 100% quote on price in Government hospitals.

Things like rino surgery, breast implants etc have definet prices so again depends what you are going in for?

Like i said i was in a Government hospital after a bad road traffic accident and spent four months there which cost me over a million baht .now i have a very large incisional hernia. I've been told by my Hospital in the UK that i need plastic surgery to repair my stomach wall but have to wait until the NHS can fit me in which could take years also means me moving back there .i would like the surgeon who fixed me up last time to do my next opp but i'm not willing to go and have it done without a price 1st .. i have heard of some stories where a government hospital will do this before being admitted ..

Yes they are very reasonable there. I used to bring my old dad there too when he was alive. Not many English speakers there but if you can speak Thai or just bring a Thai with you to help I think you will find them to be the best Government hospital (Actually a Navy hospital).

Im not sure they do surgeries there or not but you could always call and ask first of have a Thai friend call and ask.

I thought after my long stay the bill was gonna bee 20k+ and was very happy to see 7k.

Mind you they could not find out what was wrong with me ans I couldn't even stand up or walk for 1 week. Then I went to banglamung and nothing so went to QS.

When I was released I had to have a friend drive me home and have people carry my to my room then I saw a specialist who comes to BPH every sunday and was diagnosed with "Vertigo", took some pills and was up and about the very next day.

Moved to the health forum.

PS. yes they usually give you a quote but sometimes it may be difficult to give a firm quote before they're "in there" and see what exactly needs to be done.

Go talk to the billing office, tell them the name of the procedure and they will give you an estimate. it will of course only be an estimate and if there are complications, costs will be more. You'll need to tell them whether you're getting a special private room or staying on the ward as that is a factor. And be sure what they quote you includes not just the surgery but the daily charge, meds etc.

Naturally the King of Thailand uses Siriraj hospital. Having visited 2 of the biggest names in private healthcare here in Bangkok for my wife's pregnancy we wish we hadn't wasted the time. Siriraj have been wonderful to both my wife and daughter and I am seriously debating having "If involved in accident in Bangok please take to Siriraj" printed on the side of my motorbike helmet.

That is exactly right.

So much nonsense and misinformation in this thread.

easy, mate ... There's a big g'ment hospital in Khorat with obviously very skilled surgeons - some of these gentlemen are said and seen to also operate in St Mary's (private hospital Khorat) and Bangkok hospital (private hospital Khorat)

Thailand is allowed to send 100 new students to America to become doctors every year. They are required to work at a government hospital for 2 years prior to changing hospitals.

2 weeks ago while working I got an electrical shock. My heart stopped as well as a fall from height. I was sent to the nearest government hospital.. for 10 minutes my heart was stopped. Ambulance, ER costs, X rays (for broken bones, back etc.) lab test, 12 lead. 1 night in ICU, IV drugs, drugs, 3 doctors care, and a night in a private room as well as a big bag of meds when I left and the total cost was 4799 Bt. Care was top notch, and I would happily return by choice.

I know the cost back in the states would have been nearing $100K

A driving licence does not mean you are a good driver nor a medical certificate a good surgeon. Ask around, check the hospitals and the doctors, particularly the specialists. If you know a name Google can be helpful.
