'Third sex' get their own restroom at Thai college

BANGKOK: -- Transvestites and transsexuals at a private Thai college have been given their own restroom after being humiliated by classmates, a school administrator said Friday.Chiang Mai Technology College has designated a "pink lotus" bathroom for use by about 15 of its 1,500 students after the group encountered difficulties using male and female bathrooms.

"We are not supporting them to become transvestites or gay, we merely wanted to solve their problems and make them happy when they are at college," Thodsaporn Promprakai, the assistant director for students affairs, told AFP.

Several female co-eds had complained when the transgender students were found using the girls' room to escape the teasing and bullying of men in the boys' room, Thodsaporn said.

Since the "third sex" bathroom opened late last year complaints by other students have ground to a halt, he added, while the school had also noted academic improvements by the group.Thailand, notorious for its "ladyboy" transsexuals, is among Southeast Asia's most tolerant countries in terms of gay and transsexual issues, although certain legal hurdles remain including a ban on gay marriage.

Earlier this year, I taught at another college in Chiang Mai, and the males who wore female uniforms, as well as the ladyboys who wore male uniforms, used the girls' toilets without problem. In a nearby province, many of the matayom ladyboys (dressed in boys' uniforms) used the girls' toilet, without problem.

When I raised this issue to a very feminine ladybody who wears male clothing (he is from that other province but was working in Chiang Mai), he joked that most of the ladyboys were more than able to defend themselves if attacked, and a few ladyboys might even try to drag a boyboy into the stall. He was making that last one up, though.

Does it really matter which restroom they used? Personally, I was never offended. As long as his/her hands din't inadvertently slide over to my stall, we'll be just fine
