Wing 41 Passes Available For A Few Days Only Starting April 2

This is not a leftover April fools gag! Sorry not to have posted this sooner. I just got back to Thailand about 6 weeks ago and I thought what a pain that I would need to wait till November to apply and till next January to get my passes for car and motorbike. I popped in to the office early last week just to see what might be possible (with no expectation of any success). But lo and behold they tell me that this year they will offer applications again on 2 April. I went back again on Friday to be sure that this was correct info and they said yes to come in on 2 April. Sorry, I forgot to ask when the sticker will then be available, but I assume it will be within days or weeks for this offer.

I can only figure that they are doing this because they still literally had over 1,000 unclaimed passes sitting in boxes on their desk from last November/December offer.

If I recall correctly, what you need to bring in is copies of the following: green and/or blue book, Thai ID or foreign passport (I will also bring copy of visa page as well as front page), driver's license, tambien bahn or some other proof of residency like rental contract (not sure about this last item as this may not normally be required). You might bring originals of everything as well just to be safe (certainly DL and passport should be with you anyway). If I understood correctly, they said that someone else could go in for you if they bring all of the required copies. If you go by motorbike be sure you and any passenger are wearing a helmet as the mp will otherwise not let you in to the wing 41 area.

For anyone new in Chiang Mai you can see more about Wing 41 and the passes at http://www.thaivisa...._1#entry4816084 and http://www.thaivisa...._1#entry4817088

The phone numbers there are 053 281 012(-5) extension 57601 or 57666.

Good luck and enjoy your day!

BTW, completely off this topic and I will make a separate post, but if you need an excellent dental clinic with extremely reasonable price see the following post:

Thanks for the info, seeker108.

Good to know they allow a mid-year application for passes.

One small note- all that is required is green and/or blue book, passport or Thai ID card, and driver's license.

I've brought in copies of my current visa extension every year just to be sure, but they've never asked for it in 5 years. Likewise with rental contract, etc.

I'm still not sure about the driver's license- if a foreign one is accepted that is.

I've only had a Thai license for the last 5 years I've applied for the pass.

Maybe someone who has obtained a Wing 41 pass with a foreign license can clarify on this point?

Yes, that is correct in that you need copies of what you mention, but for Khon Thai however they must provide copy of tambien bahn.. Got mine done today (and I also brought copies of everything I could think of just to be safe, but not needed). No waiting at all. Now they say they will keep giving out applications until they get the number of submitted applications that match the number of passes that they have. The gent there said that through Wednesday he expects to still have and could be days longer depending on how many come in the next couple of days (Perhaps a moderator can change the title to say "Wing 41 For a Few Days Only!"). You can try one of the above numbers before you go if you want to check. You pay 5 baht when picking up application and 60 baht when you submit it. Picking up application does not guarantee you a pass, but submitting it virtually does as long as you submit everything correctly. These passes will also only be valid through December and in November you can start application for next year.

I arrived this morning at a few minutes before 8 AM and they were already open and clearly at least a few people had processed before me so maybe they open by 7:30 or so? He said the pass will be available for pick up from 23 April onwards. Not sure if that is the case for all or not, but probably.

I tucked the following in the middle of my last message but figured more clear if I post separately:

Perhaps a moderator can change the title to say "Wing 41 Passes Available For a Few Days Only!" and sub-title can be "Starting 2 April."

To clarify, its available for a couple of days, yes? Would this be only for cars, or motorbikes as well?

Thanks so much!

Sorry I forgot to mention I changed the OP's thread title per their request.

Couldn't change the sub-title; just the header.

Yeah eek it is motorsai and other lesser vehicles.....giggle.gif

I have used this road multiple times during daytime hours and only once wasn't allow to pass because my passenger didn't have a helmet.

Are the stickers only enforced at certain hours or for certain vehicles?

You were just lucky...guard was across the road changing shift, distracted for a moment, etc.

I've seen many dozens of people stopped and turned around, for every non-stickered or non-helmeted who got through.

Not trying to be a big stinker about this, but be aware- this is a military reservation. With F-16's, war weapons and armed people.

The usual TIT rules don't apply here. You get caught and start yelling and waving red notes around....I can guarantee it will not go down well. ;)

They also have a huge golf course, karaoke bars, and a hospital in there. I was in there last week one evening to meet someone. I didn't have a pass but all they wanted at the gate was my driver's license. I have driven through there a few times over the years during the day and seen the atmosphere as mcgriffith describes. But in the evening it is much different. The only person I even saw in a uniform was the guy at the gate. Everyone else was wearing shorts and there were many, many civilians in there. It was a very relaxed and informal atmosphere. I drove around in all the sois and never saw any armed guards or anything. It was quite interesting. The golf course is huge and very well lit up. Many people were playing golf at 21:30.

Thanks McG for changing the title. Also in answer to your comment about foreign DL. They definitely accept them, at least if you have the required international DL as well. Not sure if they will take FDL without the IDL.

And I will confirm that stickers can be had for cars and motorbikes. I applied for both.

Not sure if I would use it a lot but if available will give it a try.

Where is the office I would need to go to?

I have a Google map in the other topic. Can't remember the building name so someone might be able to supply that. In the below snapshot it is the building I've marked as Applications. If you type in the coordinates into Google Earth or Google Maps you may be able to zoom in closer to get a better idea of the specific location.

So, If I apply for this permit tomorrow, do I not just get it issued on-the-spot ? Do I actually have to wait until 23rd April to begin using the road through Wing41 ? .....

Receiving it in a matter of weeks blew me away as was more than i hoped Ritzo. If i recall its normally a 3 month wait. (other more experienced members in regards to the passes, should be able to confirm if this is so or not).

Edit: good point though. I wonder if maybe can use the receipt slip to go through the road whilst waiting for the official sticker..?

It will not be issued on the spot. You will have to wait until after the 23rd to use the road.

The building name is 'Security' or something like that. If coming from the Airport entrance, it is the last building on your right before you exit at the Suthep entrance. If you come in through Suthep then it is the first building on your left.

Your welcome meo00oow. For now it is probably good enough to tell the guard you are going in to get your pass, if during office hours M-F.

Re location, it is much close to the Suthep side and just before gas station on left. From airport it is just after gas station on right.

Off to bed. Getting up real early for my first drive to BKK

Odd, as the one I went to the last couple of times is about 500 meters from the Suthep side security gate going towards airport. Did they change the office?

No, you have it right. Like I said, if coming in from the Suthep entrance it would be the first building on the left which is about 500 meters as you say. The other buildings on the left near the security gate on your map are actually houses or something but are not accessible from the main road. The first accessible building is the Security building.

Thanks, that makes sense now. Guess I need to look around more when I drive through. biggrin.png

Worth noting perhaps is that they close for lunch 12:00 - 1:00.

And as mentioned, all I needed:

A. Photocopy of passport face page

B. Photocopy of ownership page of blue book (my name and vehicle ID)

C. Photocopy of driver's license

Went to room rear right to get form - 5 baht - filled it out on English language side, returned with all 4 pages, paid 70 baht more, got receipt for 23/4.

Many thanks, Seeker!

You can definitely get a wing 41 sticker with a US (NY) driver's license even without an intl license. Obviously I don't know if that applies to all countries.

and to correct someone else's point elsewhere in this thread, the pass/sticker does not expire at the end of the year. My sticker for this year was not ready until March 20 and I have been going thru regularly with the old sticker (issued in Dec 2010). I went thru as recently as March 19 with the old sticker.

Also, as has been mentioned, wear your helmet. Not for safety, that's totally up to you. But I've been stopped 5 or 6 times while wearing a helmet that doesn't look like a helmet. All the guards know me now.
