[Myanmar] Japan May Waive Billions In Burma Debt

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda is expected to announce plans to waive 300 billion yen (US $3.7 billion) in debt owed by Burma when he meets the country’s president in Tokyo on Saturday, according to a report by the Asahi Shimbun newspaper. “Following the debt waiver, [Japan] plans to resume full-fledged yen loans to the country for the first time in 25 years,†the daily said. President Thein Sein―the first Burmese head of state to visit Japan in 28 years―will be in the country from April 20 to 24.
