How Many "First" Names In Thailand?

Featured Replies

Soon we, my Thai wife and I, will have our first baby. We are thinking of giving our baby more than one first name. However, according to my wife, there are certain rules in Thailand about the length (nr of syllables) or nr of first names a child can have.

Can anyone shed a light on this please?

Thanks,

Simon

They can definitely have a middle name.

By definition wouldn't the next name after the first name be the middle name?

He/she will end up with about 15 different nicknames

Why burden it with more legal names?

Simon, this might seem like a rude reply, but it's not meant to be ... rather a statement of the obvious.

Very few of us are Thai here ... your wife is Thai ... why not simply ask her.

Then you could start a whole new thread about the intricacies of naming your Thai child.

My daughter has a British first name and a Thai middle name.

No problems.

Also on her Thai passport?

Yes, on her Thai passport and her ID card.

And on her British passport.

Thanks for your answer! I also thought Thais could have only one firstname.

my son has a thai name, uk middle name & has both on thai & uk passports. i tend to not listen to thai people when it comes to stuff like this. just give the name you want & if you get resistance at the amphur, stand your ground or go register elsewhere

To the OP Simonphuket ... You wrote the first post 10 days ago, logged off that day and haven't logged back on since?

Why start a thread and not bother to come back for review and comment?
