PM Yingluck Wants Anti-Graft Measures Strengthened

Sounds like a perfect way to make sure the graft is controlled from one central clearing house.

Anyone not on the bosses good list gets prevented from getting any,

and anything being syphoned the wrong way sends up flags.

It of course also allows the opposition to be hung out to dry,

or burning those fallen from grace as sacrificial lambs to appearances,

thus giving the impression of a cutting down on graft.

Why can't we ask ourselves, is this one of the first (positive) stepping stones for stronger anti-graft measures. Hell, Hong Kong was able to do it not too long ago, why couldn't Thailand follow suit? I say, give her a chance. BTW - the graft goes back to day dot here....

The premier explained that graft eradication was one of the government's urgent policies and that all those in charge should closely follow up on anti-corruption measures.

Government to launch anti-corruption measures

In a latest show of hostility to corruption, the government has approved new measures aimed at eliminating corrupt practices by state officials.

At a special meeting yesterday, Justice Minister Pracha Promnog, Prime Minister's Office Minister Nivatthamrong Boonsongpaisal and other related officials announced seven measures intended to end malpractice by government officials.

The measures will translate into several campaigns aimed at encouraging people’s participation in the fight against corruption, and creating a watchdog in every community and a scrutiny body to follow up complaints.

The campaigns are also expected to lead to a study into different forms of malfeasance by government agencies, improvement in the operation of government agencies to ensure transparency, protection of foreign investors and entrepreneurs against corruption and more effective management of budgets to prevent misuse of money by those in charge of government projects.

PM Yingluck Shinawatra will chair a meeting on May 18 during which she plans to discuss the measures and assign anti-corruption strategies to agencies concerned.

IMHO nothing motivates a Thai like those grey notes in your wallet. So how about whistle-blower legislation where the informer gets a healthy slab of any funds recovered from corruption, coupled with a really nasty and draconian asset-seizure law where persons convicted of corruption have to account for ALL income over the past 10 years, and prove applicable taxes paid, or lose it.

As a person of supposed integrity, the PM could propose it (if she could find parliament). Then all she has to do is find enough MPs to vote in favour - good luck with that.
