Problem Renewing Thai Id Card

Featured Replies

My Thai friend lives in London, England and is married to European man who she lives with. She has indefinite leave to remain in the UK and works full-time here. She needs to go back to Thailand later this year to renew her Thai ID, renew her Thai passport and file for divorce. However, another family member who owns her family book, won't give it to her to bring when she goes to the government office. My friend says the family book is a mandatory requirement to bring with her to the government office when she renews. Does anyone know if it's possible to go ahead with her plans without this document? The embassy in London have not been helpful at all and she is really upset over the whole situation.

Can she renew her documents without a family book? Sorry if this has been asked before. Thanks.

It should all be online now with the house registration.

She should be able to take herself off her existing one (unless she is the house owner, in which case she could ask for new one) and put herself on someone elses. So basically she needs to find a friend or family who could include her on theirs.

She wouldn't need the book to remove herself from it. But she would need a friend with a house registration to put her on.

Thank you for the reply. She was thinking of putting her name on her friends book.

Then looks like she is set to go, as no need to have old book or authorisation of house owner of old book to remove her name.

No need to use the house registration to renew Thai ID. I have never been asked for it when I renew my ID.

Just need to have old ID, take fingerprints and pay renewal fee. Whole process takes about 20 mins.

I think she will need it for the passport though.

I don't think my daughter needed house reg to renew her ID card. Apparently there is somewhere to do it at one of the BTS stations in BKK and its really quick

Don't need it for passport either, just copy old passport.

That's really helpful. Thank you. Do you know if it's possible to do it all in the UK Thai Embassy in London? My friend was told she has to do it in Bangkok. (I plan to call them next week for info and just want to get some background to prepare for the call).

You do need either a copy of the house registration or the ID card to renew the passport.

I do wonder if the OP's wife is maybe confusing things. For most renewals for ID's or anything else I've only ever needed a COPY of the house registration. Perhaps she'd have more luck asking her relative to email a scanned copy?

She can renew her passport from the UK. My wife did it a few years ago. I dont know about the id card, but if the passport is possible I cant see why the id card wont be.

Regarding the embassy in the uk, sometimes when you call you speak to a clueless buffoon, sometimes someone that is helpful. Keep calling until you get the same answer 3 times. When you get the answer you want ask for there name and any future correspondence should go through them.

Yes passport can be renewed at the embassy, but ID needs to be done in Thailand. I was in a similar situation with my ID and was told it can only be done in Thailand.
