I have recently married a Thai lady and intend in the next coiuple of years moving permanently to Thailand.

I have to visit Australia regularly (say every 3 months) to take care of my interests there..

Can I get a marriage visa with multiple entry permits in Australia? (wher I am right now), what do I do about the 90 day reporting - can it be done in Australia or must it be in Thailand?

A Multi Entry Non Imm O Visa would give you unlimited entries for a year.

Maximum of 90 days each entry.

Apply at a Thai Consulate in Aus.

A 12 month extension of stay would give you 12 months in Thailand.

A Re Entry Permit would be needed to exit the country.

Apply at Immigration in Thailand.

If not in Thailand for 90 days there is no need to report.

Thanks for the quick reply - I will contact the embassy here

I wrote to the Australian Thai Embassy and they told me they could not issue a multi entry Spouse Visa and I would have to talk with immigration with Thailand and 'state my case' . Has anyone any experience in this tht could assist?. I wrote to immigration and have not received a reply :(

I suspect you cna wait a long time for an answer.

Try one of the honorary consuates in Australia to get a multiple non-O, like Brisbane.

Posted

You should contact the Honorary Thai Consulate in Brisbane or one of the others in Australia if you want the multiple entry visa (list of honorary consulates is on embassy website). You must of contacted the official Thai consulate associated with the embassy thats why you got the wrong answer.

My reply was from the 'Visa and Consular Services Royal Thai Embassy' <[email protected]>' is this the wrong person?

It is the wrong consulate. Go to this webpage and pick one of the consulates that has honorary in front of consuls name. http://canberra.thai.../consulate.html

Embassies tend to be stricter than honorary consulates. A honorary consul doesn't get a salary, he gets a commission for every visa they issue, that is why they tend to be more friendly.

Thanks - I sent an email to the Melbourne one.

The advise is Brisbane, I'm not sure about Melbourne.

I spooke to the Melbourne consulate - I am even more confused now.

They said I could apply for a multi entry spouse visa AUD$225 which will allow me to enter for a max 90 days each trip or a spouse visa where I could enter once for 90 days for $90

A multiple entry non-O visa is valid for 1 year from date of issueance and allows you to travel to Thailand an unlimited number of times, as long as the visa itself is still valid. Each time you enter Thailand you can stay for up to 90 days, then you have to leave the country but can come back the same hour if needed, as long as the visa is valid.

By leaving an returning just before the visa itself expires you can get another 90 days and so almost 15 months out of it.

A single is only valid for 1 trip to Thailand, for a stay of up to 90 days.

Given your frequent travel plans the multiple non-O makes the most sense.

Thanks heaps

So, if I was going spending 3 months in Oz then same in Thailand am I better to get the 90 ($90) day Non O visa in Australia and then get a 1 year extension (not sure of $) multi entry in Thailand which would give me 90 days + 15 months (if I time it right)?

If you plan frequent travel the multi entry visa is your best option as extension of stay will require you be in Thailand at least three to four months to even start it (60 days after arrival to apply and at least 30 days under review) and any travel on extension of stay would require a re-entry permit (multi entry costing 3,800 baht) so cheaper to use multi entry visas and a whole lot easier with no requirement for money in Thailand or visits to immigration.

Posted

That is a possibility, with the 1 year extension (cost 1,900 baht) you will need a re-entry permit (single 1,000 baht, multiple 3,800 baht).

What is best depends a lot on your travel plans, if you plan to stay longer than 90 days in a row the 1 year extension is a good solution, if not, the multiple is the most convinient.

thanks - I will go with the 90 day O and then apply for the multi entry ( though the minimum of 30 days to process worries me a bit ), I will probvably apply at Mae Sai immigration - are any quicker at processing than others?

If this is your plan it makes no sense to extend your stay - just obtain the multi entry non immigrant O visa valid for one year of 90 day stays (one time deal for less total cost) and no worry about having time to obtain extension of stay. If you change plans to remain in Thailand you can easily extend any 90 day stay at that time.

If you plan to extend remember you must have 400k in your name bank account here for 2 monts or letter of income from your Embassy as part of extension paperwork.

is it cheaper ? if I get the first 90 day in melbourne it costs $90 (2700b) and then 3800 for the multi entry total 6500b for up to 15 months the multi entry in melbourne would cost $225 around 6750 baht. Around the same cost but I think now there would be less hassle with the multi entry in Melbourne

It will also cost you 1,900 baht for extension of stay - letter from bank will be about 200 - other copies, paperwork will likely run a few thousand more (photos/travel of witness may be required). Plus much easier for both you and wife if you use visa entry until full time (or mostly) stay anticipated.
