My friend teaches at a university in Thailand, he is married to a Thai and they were married in the UK some years ago, they have a child and a house here. My friend is not old enough for a retirement visa.

It looks like he will be out of contract soon and as yet hasn't secured another post. He is doing some private work but is not sure how that counts for a Work Permit.

So what are his options short term please, his wife also teaches in a Uni and is reasonably well paid.

His is thinking about a Marriage Vise but I don't think that he has 400,000 baht in a bank account. At at present he earns a reasonable salary. He also thinks that for this visa he needs to marry again in Thailand ... I said don't think so, you can't marry if you are already married ...just get your UK marriage certificate transulated into Thai.

Opinions .....Thanks

The title of this is 'I may be out of work for a period' but you start off 'I have a friend...'

so who it it, you or a friend?

Regardless of who is who the rules do not allow work without a work permit so that should be a priority. Extension of stay for one year for Thai wife is what requires 40k per month income or 400k in bank two months and that requires marriage be recorded at a district office in Thailand (not a new marriage) which is just translation/certification by your Embassy and then registration at MFA as legal document and then recording at District Office (more steps than actual work and many people have done without issues).

But for visa single entry is available from any Thai Consulate with copy of current marriage certificate/original for show and copy of wife ID card and home registers. Some will provide multi entry valid for one year - Savannakhet is best now with no financial requirement - KL requires proof of 100k - home countries will normally issue without financial requirements. There is also a 60 day extension of stay available from any entry at Immigration.
