BANGKOK: -- The Meteorological Department on Monday has issued a warning for people in northern Thailand to be prepared for heavy rain and flash flooding:

No. 10 Time Issued : May 07, 2012

The active southwesterly winds and the low pressure cell affects torrential rainfall in the western country and the East while isolated very heavy rain occurs mainly in the North. The areas include Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phrae, Nan, Uttraradit, Sukhothai, Tak, Kamphaeng Phet, Phitsanulok, and Phetchabun

All ships in the Andaman Sea should proceed with caution during 1-2 days.

The advisory is in effect for Thailand from 7 May 2012

Issued at 11.00 a.m.

People in the western and eastern regions have been warned of torrential rainfall caused by the active southwesterly winds and a low pressure cell.

The department said continued heavy rain is expected in the North.

The areas include Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phrae, Nan, Uttraradit, Sukhothai, Tak, Kamphaeng Phet, Phitsanulok and Phetchabun.

In Lamphun, heavy flooding has struck the northern province after two days of rain, as provincial authorities are deploying more water pumps to drain floodwater.

Chumporn Intathep, chief of the Office of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation in Lamphun, said on Monday that many roads in the province are flooded but are still commutable by cars and motorcycles.

Not the same. This is run-off from the water coming down the mountain.

This would not have happened 20 years or so ago but massive deforestation has increased the run off so that water (more of it) just gets to lower ground more quickly.

I hear it's very dry up there, thought i heard about seeding the clouds to make rain. Looks like nature is taking it's course, good for the rice fields.

555, Isn't that exactly what caused the flooding throughout so much of the country and Bangkok last year, heavy rains and "run-off from the water coming down the mountain"s ?

Who is kidding who, I am in Chiang Mai and I can assure you the rain has been coming down from the sky not the mountians and the local Khlong is already at almost the top. Agree flooding later will come from mountins but that is several days away.

And we know (from painful experience) that experience being a clan's bagman and rent collector gives a person such expertise in weather prediction, civil engineering, and water management

Just had 2 hours of heavy rain with mild thunder, looks threatening. 80km East of Udon Thani. ---- Heaviest rain for years in 2011 but no flooding here, water started flowing South immediately. wai.gif

Here we go again...and again...and again. Cut another tree down so have more excitement in our lives.

I hope all the people up there will be ok, question is, are headed for a repeat of last year? What has the government done to prepare for such an occurance?

Flash Flood

A flash flood is caused by excess water, usually from a storm. This usually happens downstream from the storm as heavy rains produce more water than the area can handle with nothing to impede its buildup or soak it into the ground.

As a weatherman in Oklahoma recently put it: "It is when a large rain and storm system hovers an area and does 'not leave' or 'move on' (as generally seen with systems) but instead stays, dumping supernatural amounts of water in a "flash," overwhelming even the more extraordinary and multi-competant drainage and levy systems."

Before this rumour gets out of hand and is repeated as the truth this is what she actually said

The Thai premier said she had ordered the establishment of schemes to help companies get back on their feet from the disaster that knocked businesses sideways last year.

"I have reaffirmed to the Japanese government and business leaders that the Royal Thai government is committed to ensuring that the devastation caused by such disasters will never happen again," she told reporters in Tokyo during a joint press conference with her Japanese opposite number.

When you exaggerate to make a point the valid parts of your argument are lost. The 2nd worst flooding in recorded Thai history occured in 1993. But yes deforestation does hasten flooding but flooding would indeed have happened 20 years ago.

No, not only the prime minister, I remember another disaster minister"expert" a few weeks ago, stating that fact, as it was also published in this forum not too long ago...

Those highso imbeciles have no dignity for public human political relationship consent, as they continue to enjoy themselves with the population's tax money and foreigner's Visa tax expenses, while the rest of the population are the screwed ones in this corrupt cycle.

Please provide the source.

I'm living in Chiang Mai and I could swear that it was raining pretty much all day yesterday and some more this morning. I guess that they called up to Chiang Mai and asked one of their staff to stick their head out the window and take a look.

As usual print what makes her look good.

She also promised reforestation with in three months.

First of all it’s La Niña, - nothing happens as usual! We saw heavy floods in Australia at a very early time in the year, a couple of days ago in Japan and Bangladesh. Maybe the science & technology minister (the expert who could not even run a zoo properly) should prepare his propellers again and knit on a huge umbrella.

How about getting prepared for earthquakes AND floods this year for a change???

Double trouble???

Is the same Minister in charge of water control (dams etc) still in the job ??? after all it was him who confessed to the blunder last year of not releasing water. If so will he be keeping watch ??? the same as others are watching prices in shops, and others are watching that police do not go to far when arresting drug barons, and gambling dens---I mean it's not cricket to stamp on your own.

And from that post the quote is

Dr Virabongsa Ramangkura, chairperson of the Strategic Committee for Reconstruction and Future Development (SCRF), said on Wednesday he was confident Thailand will not face a repetition of last year's flood crisis, as the government has been on the right track on water management and flood prevention.

Which as I have stated is NOT the same as saying there will be no flooding this year as claimed by you and lovetotravel.

How about getting prepared for earthquakes AND floods this year for a change???

Double trouble???

Don't mention earth quakes till we find out if the glass at Swampy is tempered/toughened, or just normal. Horror !!!!!

Another well thought-out ThaiVisa contribution to a rational discussion of events in Thailand.
