hi guys,

this isn't a question about a type of insurance i need persay so hope its ok to put it here for more responses.

the wife would like to be an insurance broker. car, motorbike, pickup, mostly. maybe a bit of life and health later.

any of you guys have a spouse in a similar situation or maybe someone who sells it already.

what is the procedure, please, for being able to sell it. does she have to do an exam ? can she just approach an insurance organisation and become an agent for them ? your help is very much appreciated.

we live in the sticks, so anything that means the natives don't have to make the long trip into town should do well here.

many thanks in advance for your suggestions.

take care. wai.gif

ps. Mods, sorry for posting twice but the title of the previous one was really bad. feel free to close it. thanks.

You would think so....meaning need to get a license or take exams etc like the rest of the world.

But not in Thailand

It is like becoming a Avon seller or Tupperware etc.

Because basically they are just bird dogging

They find buyers & pass them onto their agent & get a commission

Hi sorry no I do not have info on how they set up

I only know there are always a few in each village who solicit others

& get a commission for it.

The Mrs did this a few years ago. I don’t remember the name of the company, but I do remember it being a large reputable one. She was required to take some classes at their office; I think it was about 25-30 hours, over a few weeks. They also installed a program on her laptop, so she could input information at the customer’s home. She was not licensed, but did need the classes to familiarize herself with their policies and procedures. She was selling mostly life and medical insurance. The commissions were reasonable, and it’s easy work if your wife likes to chat.

Know many people who are in the selling of insurance game, some were connected with my work.

Most actually work as agents for agents, meaning the top long-term well established agents of an insurance company hire others to work with them and form a sort of a team network. The top of the line agents are paid commissions directly from the company and those included within the networks are paid commissions from the agents who are pointing them in the direction of the clients. This means that the head agent claims the full commission and pays his network team a percentage of this.

The so-called training is negligible, usually a few hours demonstration at a main office or from another agent. The insurance companies do expect their agents to be of smart appearance, including dress and the vehicles they drive. This is for the purposes of giving the insurance company a good professional image in view of it`s customers. Good communication skills are a must, which includes Internet skills and being available by phone more or less at all times, plus cold calling and visits. It does require a lot of skill regarding the sales pitch. Something like being able to sell a fridge to an Eskimo. It really is the hard sell in it`s purest form.

The big commissions are to be had in savings and life insurance policies and this side of the business is extremely cutthroat. Agents will try any methods to obtain the up market savings investor’s customers considering the big dividends they yield. Some of the more attractive female agents if it involves catching a big fish, that’s a life insurance and savings investment policy maybe to the value of millions of bahts may include sex and the entertainment of male clients. The agent earns a huge commission from the deal and the client get his bonus paid in kind in some hotel room somewhere and perhaps a few days with a female companion. The problems are that most of the more lucrative policy customers are first given to the old hands or the higher end agents, the company’s pets and favourites. Probably those who are rather less orthodox in their methods of obtaining the more prominent insurance customers and acquired the best annual results. Usually the lesser agents are only given the scrapes and lower end assignments.

It is extremely difficult to establish a career in insurance, unless prepared to work really hard at it, be somewhat outgoing and adventurous in the approach with customers. The actual company is only interested in results, facts and figures and doesn’t care how these are archived providing of course the methods used are done discretely without bringing the company into disrepute.

My advice is, that unless being a born salesperson with the gift of the gab, prepared to go to extremes and work long hours in order to achieve the goals, than I would avoid the insurance industry altogether.
