I had a conversation with two guys on ED visas. One wants to go travel a bit and let the visa extension "run out" and reenter on a 30 day visa waiver to do some Muay thai course. I was under the impression that you had to notify immigration that you were letting your visa expire or you would have problems upon the next visit to Thailand.

Anybody know the procedure? Likely this happens a bit and I would like to know the proper way to do it.

Officially, when on an extension of stay and the reason for the extension no longer exist your permisison to stay ends. So when you are on an extension of stay based on studying and no longer study, you have to inform immigration and leave the country the same day.

Where does he want to travel?

The Ed visa is only valid while you are attending your classes, so in practice you'd have some wiggle room before the school's reporting system caught up with you, but legally you're supposed to get yourself changed over to another basis right away.

If you just quit attending and left the country right away that shouldn't be a problem, but if you're planning on having further dealings with Immigration best to just pop in and ask them for advice beforehand - while you're still fully legit of course.

Actually if on extension of stay they can be detained at border and required to return to cancel there current extension of stay. This is being checked at Nong Khai exit from several recent reports.

I thought they gave you 7 days to leave the country?

No, have to apply for a 7 day extension or leave.

That used to be true but no longer except for BOI one stop customers. Others have to apply for extension of stay to remain 7 days after it is declined, or to remain on a different extension of stay if it can be approved.

Hmm so no concensus. I think you should have to do something at chaeng wattana but then again if they cancel it wouldn't he be residing without papers? He is going by plane to Cambodia so now border patrol shenanigans but still.

He must leave if not converting to another type of extension or the denied extension so a flight out that day or even next will not result in any fine. Beyond that it would.
